posted on
Pokémon: The First Movie, which opened Wednesday, was the #1 film in American movie theaters over the weekend. Ticket sales for Friday through Sunday show the film has grossed $31,036,678 on 3,043 screens, averaging about $10,642 a theater. Total American gross for the film to-date is $50,754,104. The film was acquired by Warner Brothers for $5 million and the studio reportedly spent $10 million in production to turn out the American version. In its continuing wake, Pokémon is creating new records across the board; the film set a 5-day record for any movie outside of the Summer months of May, June, and July. In particular interest to anime fans, Pokémon is the first Japanese film to beat U.S. films in the U.S. market and take top slot in box office returns, it's also the first anime film to make the same achievements.
