Montreal Anime Expo

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Run by same company as CN Anime and Great American Anime Expo Boston.

Hobby Star, the company that runs the Canadian National Anime Expo (CNAnime) and the now defunct Great American Anime Expo, as well as a number of Sci-fi and comic book conventions (often in conjuction with an anime con), will be holding an anime convention in Montreal next weekend. the Montreal Anime Expo 2003 will be a shared event with the Montreal Comic Book Expo and the Montreal Science Fiction Expo. Details are available here.

Although still a shared event, the Montreal Anime Expo 2003 will be Montreal's first anime conventions.

Hobby Star and the SPJA have argued over the use of the name "Anime Expo" many times in the past. However the SPJA, which holds a service mark (similar to a trademark) of the name in the United States, is said to have never taken the Canadian company to court due to the difficulty of a cross border lawsuit. However in 2001, when Hobby Star attempted to use the Anime Expo name in Boston the SPJA was able to force Hobby Star not to use the name. In the end Hobby Star did use the Anime Expo name in Boston, but the Boston event did not return for a second year.
