Protoculture Addicts Writer Emru Townsend Passes Away (Updated)

posted on by Mikhail Koulikov
Animation, media writer had been suffering from leukemia

Emru Townsend, a prolific writer on anime, videogames, and other entertainment and technology topics and a contributor to Anime News Network's Protoculture Addicts magazine, passed away in Montreal on Tuesday night. He had leukemia and recently, made a public appeal for potential bone marrow donors from under-represented ethnic backgrounds to add their name to donor registries. Although he was then able to find a donor match and receive a bone-marrow transplant in September, his cancer did not go into remission.

Townsend's many writing credits included articles in PC World, Animation World, and Sci-Fi Entertainment. He was also the founder and editor of the online animation magazine Frames Per Second. After being diagnosed, Emru blogged about his experience living with cancer on HealEmru.com.

The staff of ANN wishes to express our condolences to Emru Townsend's wife, daughter, sister, and parents.

Update: Townsend had a son, not a daughter. ANN apologizes for the error. Thank you to AJ Kandy for the correction.
