posted on by Egan Loo
Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: The Daily Telegraph newspaper's website reports that the Tokyo-based publishing company East Press is releasing a manga guide version of Karl Marx's Das Kapital treatise next month. Das Kapital: Manga de Dokuha (Reading Das Kapital through Manga) will use manga storytelling to explain the concepts in Marx's tract on political economy. East Press is planning to capitalize on the success of its manga version of Takiji Kobayashi's Kanikōsen novel, which recounts the proletarian struggle of crab boat workers. The manga retelling (pictured at right) has sold 507,000 so far this year as Japan slides further into a recession.
East Press has already published manga guides for Dante's Divine Comedy, Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust, Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf, Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince, Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Antoine De Saint-Exupéry's Night Flight, William Shakespeare's King Lear, Stendhal's The Red and the Black, and Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. One of the other titles, Kenji Miyazawa's Night on the Galactic Railroad, has also been made into an anime movie by Gisaburô Sugii and Group TAC.
