English-Dubbed/Subbed Whisper of the Heart BD in Japan in July

posted on by Egan Loo

Walt Disney Studio Japan announced that the Japanese Blu-ray Disc (BD) of Yoshifumi Kondô and Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart (Mimi wo Sumaseba) film will ship on July 20 with English-language dubbing and subtitles.

The Blu-ray version will feature Japanese (linear PCM stereo or DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1ch), English (DTS 5.1ch), German (DTS 5.1ch), Cantonese Chinese (DTS 5.1ch), Mandarin Chinese (Dolby Digital Surround), and Korean (Dolby Digital Surround) soundtracks. It will also have subtitles in Japanese, English, Korean, Chinese, and at least one other language.

The Blu-ray Disc release's bonus extras will include the storyboards as a picture-in-picture option, the audio recording script, the Baron no Kureta Monogatari collection of background art from Naohisa Inoue, the four-part "Inoue Naohisa no Ichi-mai no E ga Dekiru made" video, and a collection of trailers.

The suggested retail price for the Blu-ray is 7,140 yen (about US$84). Disney's Buena Vista Home Entertainment released the film on DVD in North America in 2006.

The film adapts Aoi Hiiragi's manga about a girl who, through a series of encounters in her Tokyo-area neighborhood, learns to trust her writing talent and grow as a person. Whisper of the Heart opened in Japan in 1995 as Studio Ghibli's first theatrical feature film that was not directed by its two co-founders, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. Kondô passed away less than three years later.
