The sixth volume of Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) manga sold 285,829 copies to top Oricon's comic ranking chart in Japan for the December 5-11 week. It is the third volume in the series to reach #1, after the third and fourth volumes did so last December and this past April.
The manga depicts the battles between humans and the man-eating giants who now rule the world. Isayama launched Attack on Titan in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in 2009. The manga has become a sleeper hit, selling over 5.5 million copies within the past year. Kodansha USA licensed the manga for North America.
Kodansha confirmed this year that a film adaptation will open in Japan in fall of 2013 or later. Director Tetsuya Nakashima (Kamikaze Girls, Confessions, Paco and the Magical Picture Book) will begin shooting the live-action film during or after next spring's Golden Week holidays.
Update: North American publisher corrected, and intro fixed. Thanks, OniTasku, and thenextday.
