Anima Festival, Belgium's annual film festival dedicated to animation, will open this year with Goro Miyazaki's second film, From Up On Poppy Hill. The 10-day film festival is dedicated to showcasing animation from around the world, with an emphasis on Asian content in this year's event.
Adapted from Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsuro Sayama's shojo coming-of-age manga, the film grossed over US$56 million in Japan, making it the number 4 grossing film of the year 2011 in the country, and the number 1 Japanese-produced film for the year. The film won Animation of the Year as well as Best Domestic Feature Film honors in this year's Tokyo Anime Fair awards, and has been nominated for Best Animated Film in this year's Japan Academy Prizes. Winners will be announced in a ceremony on March 2.
The festival will open with From Up on Poppy Hill on February 17 in Flagey, Brussels.
