The Last Guardian, Skies of Arcadia's U.S. Trademarks Renewed

posted on by Egan Loo

Sony Computer Entertainment America filed for a new game trademark on The Last Guardian in the United States on August 9, 2012. The company had already filed a trademark on that name on June 2, 2009, but the older filing is now listed as "abandoned" as of August 6, 2012. Trademark filings can be listed as abandoned if they are not used within a certain timeframe, but they can be refiled. Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shūhei Yoshida said last month that Team ICO and Sony Computer Entertainment are still working on the game for the PlayStation 3 console.

In a separate development, Sega renewed its trademark on Skies of Arcadia, the English title of the Eternal Arcadia role-playing game, on July 11, 2012. The company had filed for the original trademark on May 19, 2000 and received its registration on July 16, 2002. Sega has not announced any new Skies of Arcadia projects.

Under United States law, a trademark must be renewed every 10 years, and its owner must submit an affidavit stating that the trademark is still actively being used every 5 years, or the trademark will expire.
