Gainax's Blue Uru Pilot Film Slated for 2014

posted on by Egan Loo

Anime studio Gainax officially announced on its Facebook page for its long-dormant Blue Uru (Aoki Uru) project that a pilot film will open in 2014. Gainax had announced on the first day of Tokyo International Anime Fair in March that it is still working towards an anime film of Blue Uru. Character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto told ANN in an interview last week that Gainax is still looking for sponsors for the project.

Hiroyuki Yamaga is writing and directing the project with designs by Sadamoto. Both had worked together in the same roles in the 1987 anime film Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise.

Gainax began plans for Blue Uru in 1992 with director Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion), writer Hiroyuki Yamaga(Wings of Honneamise), and executive producer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Wings of Honneamise). The project was suspended the following year, with revivals announced in 1998 and 2001.

A CD-ROM titled "Blue Uru Frozen Designs Collection" was released in 1998 featuring mechanical, character, and background designs, fighter planes designed by Masamune Shirow (Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell) and Kazuki Miyatake (Moldiver, The Daichis - Earth Defence Family), as well as Yamaga's original screenplay.
