Funimation announces 4K HDR discs will be available in February 2021, purchasers of previous 4K edition will be able to receive them

Funimation has announced on its website that an HDR (High Dynamic Range) 4K edition of Akira will be available in February 2021, and it will be available via a replacement scheme to purchasers of the recent 4K edition of Akira, which was in SDR (Standard Dynamic Range).

Customers in the UK and Ireland should contact the email address akira4kreplacementUK@funimation.com with “AKIRA 4K” as the subject. They should provide their name, mailing address, email address and proof of purchase.

The proof of purchase should be a receipt or confirmation email and a photo of the disc. For customers who do not have a receipt or confirmation email, they will need to send to current disc to Funimation to get it upgraded.

After emailing the address above, customers will receive a return authorization number. Customers who do not have a receipt or confirmation email will get an address where they should mail their current disc.

Funimation commented, "Funimation is committed to making sure that this historic film matches the artistry in which Otomo intended, as well as in the format you want to enjoy it in."

Anime UK News had previously reported issues with Manga Entertainment's home releases of the 4K Akira was in 4K SDR, not 4K HDR. Katsuhiro Ōtomo's film had been released in 4K HDR10 by Bandai Visual in Japan and Leonine in Germany.
