Anime Limited has announced on its blog that it will release a 4K Deluxe edition of Mamoru Hosoda's 2009 film Summer Wars on May 11. This edition will be sold exclusively on the AllTheAnime store.
It will contain the film on both 4K UHD and standard Blu-ray discs, as well as a second Blu-ray discs with extra features and a CD of the film's Original Soundtrack.
The 4K Deluxe edition will also include a set of five art cards featuring key visuals from the film, and a single plastic art card, featuring the characters of King Kazuma and Kenji in their Oz forms. The set will also include a fabric replica Jinnouchi family banner (30cm x 90cm).
As well as the 4K Deluxe Edition, Anime Limited will also release a Steelbook edition of the film on the same date, carrying the film on 4K UHD and standard Blu-ray discs. This will be released on April 27.
There will also be new standard Blu-ray and DVD editions of the film. They will also be released on April 27.
Hosoda and Madhouse Studios' Summer Wars opened in Japan in July 2009. Funimation previously described the film:
"Kenji is your typical teenage misfit. He's good at math, bad with girls, and spends most of his time hanging out in the all-powerful, online community known as OZ. His second life is the only life he has - until the girl of his dreams, Natsuki, hijacks him for a starring role as a fake fiance at her family reunion. Things only get stranger from there. A late-night email containing a cryptic mathematic riddle leads to the unleashing of a rogue AI intent on using the virtual word of OZ to destroy the real world, literally. As Armageddon looms on the horizon, Kenji and his new "family" set aside their differences and band together to save the worlds they inhabit."
Anime Limited also mentions in the same announcement that, "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is our next stop on our journey through Mamoru Hosoda's filmography.... We may even have another Mamoru Hosoda outing featuring a virtual world to talk about in due course. We also have plenty more in the pipeline, including Bleach, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM and more."
