The Wind Rises
Dir: Hayao Miyazaki / 2013 / Japan / In Japanese w/ English subtitles / 126 min

Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo), perhaps the world's preeminent animator, is retiring after a 50-year legacy, with this award-winning, beautifully hand-drawn piece, voiced by a bevy of stars ranging from Werner Herzog to Stanly Tucci. Combining history and fantasy, his most complex work soars with flight. Inspired by the Italian designer Caproni, Jiro (voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) dreams of designing and flying beautiful airplanes. Unable to become a pilot, he instead joins a Japanese engineering firm, where his designs earn the respect of leaders in the industry. Following much of Jiro's life, including major historic events culminating in the attacks of WWII, The Wind Rises is Miyazaki's tribute to engineer Jiro Horikoshi and author Tatsuo Hori, an epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.
