Otaku Brain Trust Convention Kickstarter Announced
Academically-Focused Anime Convention Seeks Funding
WASHINGTON, DC – June 9, 2015 - Otaku Brain Trust is excited to announce that it will begin seeking funding via Kickstarter. The convention will be a small, panel-only, academically-focused convention about Japanese anime and manga, held 19-21 February 2016 in Leesburg, VA, just outside Washington, D.C. The convention will be open to the public and will consist of panels only. In fact, there will be only one panel track.
The Kickstarter will pay for the convention's costs. Those who can't attend can pay for early access to panel transcripts and/or video recordings of the panels. The organizers also plan to live-stream the convention to the public if possible. All panels will be recorded on video and posted publicly to YouTube after the convention.
The cost breakdown is as follows:
· Conference room - $2,250 (with tax)
· Hotel rooms for panelists and staff - $1,600 (10 panelists/staff at $80 per night for 2 nights)
· Food and beverage - $610 (coffee, tea, water, chips)
· Incorporation as non-profit - $200
· Badges - $225
· Kickstarter and credit card fees: $490
· TOTAL - $5,375
Convention staff has received interest from Brent Allison, Aaron Clark, Patrick Drazen, Pamela Gossin, Kathryn Hemmann, John Lent, Marco Pelliteri, Brian Ruh, and Marc Steinberg. Panelists will receive free hotel rooms.
The convention will be held at the Best Western Leesburg, which has a dozen food options in easy walking distance of the conference. It's a 20-minute drive from Dulles International Airport and offers free shuttle service.
Our space will accommodate up to 200 people, so the number of public badges is limited to to 190, with the remaining for con staff and panelists waiting for their panel.
Otaku Brain Trust is a new convention created by Brent Newhall and Nick Oxford.
