Ghost in the Shell Receives Luxury Art TechnoByobu Collaboration

Collaboration brings together "Ghost in the Shell" and traditional Japanese craftsmanship

Tokyo, Japan – Embodying the essence of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, TechnoByobu is the continuation of decades of careful curation through the U/M/A/A brand—a tribute to the creativity and ingenuity of Japanese artists across all mediums, delivered to those who celebrate their work both within Japan and abroad. Continuing from the landmark release of “TB-01,” featuring Yellow Magic Orchestra's iconic self-titled album's artwork across a gold leaf-pressed byobu folding screen, TechnoByobu is thrilled to showcase their latest lineup with TB-02 via a collaboration with the globally renowned series Ghost in the Shell.

The franchise's enduring themes of identity, embodiment, and the boundary between human and machine gain new resonance through metal-leaf luminosity and layered printing designed to create depth, silence, and presence in real space. Utilizing exquisite gold and dual-foil metal leaf pressing techniques, these byobu stand as a testament to Japan's enduring art forms, brought to life through a modern lens that embodies the nature of "techno."

For this lineup, we've developed four variants of the byobu (folding screens) adorned with two unique designs: the “TB-02-KP: Compact” featuring the original manga illustration of Motoko Kusanagi piloting the Fuchikoma, and “TB-02-GT: Cyborg” featuring Motoko Kusanagi connected to cybernetic cables from Mamoru Oshii's 1995 anime film. These come in either Golden Brass Leaf or Pewter Leaf variants, laying the base for these variants.

These products will be available for preview and pre-order domestically in Japan at “Ghost in the Shell: The Exhibition,” scheduled to take place on January 30, 2026, at TOKYO NODE.

About TechnoByobu:

Embodying the essence of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, TechnoByobu is the continuation of decades of careful curation through the U/M/A/A brand—a tribute to the creativity and ingenuity of Japanese artists across all mediums, delivered to those who celebrate their work both within Japan and abroad. Created in collaboration with artisans carrying on more than a century of heritage, these metal-leaf infused works bring contemporary culture into the tradition of the Japanese byobu—an art form designed to shape space, reflect light, and endure across time. Originally launched as the 20th anniversary project of music label U/M/A/A, the TechnoByobu line began with TB-01, featuring Yellow Magic Orchestra's iconic self-titled album artwork across a folding screen in 2023. The first release established TechnoByobu's signature approach: honoring original works while presenting them as museum-grade, collectible craft.

About Rekiseisha:

Founded in 1905, Rekiseisha quickly distinguished itself by developing a revolutionary technique: foil-pressed paper using Western metal leaf (yokinpaku). Made of brass, this foil was as beautiful as costly gold leaf, yet far more resistant to discoloration over time—a groundbreaking innovation that expanded the possibilities of Japanese decorative arts. For over a century, Rekiseisha's products have been used in some of Japan's most prestigious settings, including the Imperial Hotel, the Imperial Household Agency, and Nishi Hongan-ji Temple. Today, their craftsmanship also finds its place on the global stage, recognized by luxury fashion houses such as CHANEL and GUCCI. The enduring quality of Rekiseisha's work reflects not only the mastery of traditional techniques, but also the spirit of innovation that continues to keep byōbu alive as both cultural heritage and contemporary design.

About U/M/A/A:

Originally founded in 2003, U/M/A/A Inc. has long maintained its status as a next-generation record label pushing the boundaries of uniting the ethos of both "music" and "art" -- reaching into the depths of manga, anime, games, electronics, and fashion in the constant search for innovation. From their early adoption of Vocaloid technology and partnerships with the musicians at the forefront of this scene, to club and electronic music, U/M/A/A continues to push the representation of music without the boundaries of genre. Constantly aiming to further evolve the 21st-century music industry, U/M/A/A established the artist management company P.nc (Pink), became the official Japan and Asia representative of US-based video game vinyl and merchandise distributor iam8bit, and opened CHILL SPACE in Shibuya Cross Tower, a casual relaxation space in the booming business hub of Shibuya, Tokyo. Through these projects, U/M/A/A continues to explore just what can be achieved at the frontier of the music industry.

About Ghost in the Shell:

Ghost in the Shell, created by Masamune Shirow, stands as one of the defining works of Japanese cyberpunk. Set in a near-future networked society, it follows Major Motoko Kusanagi and Section 9 as they confront cybercrime and terrorism in a world where the line between the human body and technology has nearly disappeared. What makes the series resonate far beyond Japan is not just its thrilling action or futuristic designs, but its deep philosophical questions. In a world where the human brain connects directly to vast networks, what does it mean to have a “ghost,” a consciousness, or a soul? Where does identity reside when memories and bodies can be replaced or manipulated? These themes, coupled with Shirow's intricate world-building, have influenced creators around the globe. From Hollywood films like “Matrix “to countless explorations of AI and virtual identity in art and media, Ghost in the Shell helped shape the global imagination of the digital age. It remains a rare work: a Japanese manga and anime that transcends its origins to become part of worldwide discussions about technology, humanity, and the future of consciousness.
