Finished Shiki. Overall I felt that it was a very well done anime in terms of the visuals, music, acting and pacing (among other things), but I had some issues with the plot that irritated me. (That I went into in more detail on the Shiki thread so I won't bother with it here.) I think it's a great anime to look into if you're a horror fan, but as a psychological thriller there's better anime out there.

Hi All,

Well over the last four months I have watched
1. Cooking Master Boy: Something of a cross betwwen Iron Chef and Anime! set in China. Enjoyed it. Bought It.
2: Genshiken, Genshiken 2 and OVA's: Real Otoku stuff!! Yeay!, Was well worth the effort, My favorite is Ohno, dont know why but she seems the real Otoku of the bunch, cute, but determined, and devious as well hahaha!! anyway I enejoyed it and again bought it.
3: K-On 1 and 2 + Ova's, Luv these girls, bit like lucky star, Azumanga daiho, and bamboo blade etc. Girls having fun playing music at school. Sadly I am (Very) addicted.. Bought all series.
4: Seikon No Qwasar: Hmmmmmmm... Fan serrvice galore, some plot, sent in error when I bough Cooking Master Boy, not the best but watchable, definitly rated Adult viewing.
5: Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko: I think someone wanted to make an anime.. Could have been good but only avarage. Watchable but would not buy.
6: The Third: The girl with the blue eye: Good show and enjoyed it, bought it!
7: Finished watching Spice and Wolf season 2, hope theres more seasons to finish it off properly. Seriously considertion for purchase.
8: Sgt Frog - Seasons 1 to 4.. Good laugh follow the adventure of Sgt Keroro, enjoyed it and bought it!
9: Ponyo on the cliff by the sea: Enjoyable but more aimed at young children, Bought it and gave it to my grand children who loved it.
10: Panda go Panda: ditto as for Ponyo.
11 Watching Hell Girl, to Vol 4 so far. Interesting show, will watch more.
11: Kamichu: Enjoyed this, was a fun watch. May buy.
12: Moon Phase: good show a few laughs, enjoyed it and bought it.
13: Kujibiki Unbalance: If you watch Genshiken then this has to be one to watch as well! Better than average I supose, I enjoyed it anyway.

Enough to keep one satisfied I supose and over christmas break also revisited many old favorites as well! Wink

Finished that thing with the princess from the moon. It was pretty generic till the very end, but the latter half was a lot better.

And The Melancholy of Yuki Nagato. Delightful. Simply fantastic. I didn't know Haruhi could be this outstanding without Haruhi. To be fair, they should have dragged the other Haruhi.
The story, the twist, just amazing. I thought spoiler[Kyon was the culprit], but turned out he wasn't, although he was indirectly to blame, as well.
Bravo. Aishiteru, Yuki!

I have also seen a whole bunch of Winter shows. But forgot most of it. Cardfight's shopkeeper is damn hot, or was it the alcohol?

Since I'm in the mood for amazing stuff, the next up is Unlimited Blade Works, followed by either cinema or Gundam 00's movie.

Edit: Yep. Blade Works was epic, and Rin is a very charming lady. I'm now really looking forward to the next series.

Finally saw Summer Wars yesterday and I loved it. It's a fun, hyper, over-the-top movie which manages to have a good message for the kiddies in it without beating you over the head with it. Quite pleased with it overall and it's going on my BR to-buy list.

This evening I watched my R4 copy of Genius Party. Each of its segments demonstrate the creative profoundness one would expect from reputable animators working to a cinematic budget. Standards of visuals aside, it is possible to further compare each contribution by the degree to which each is either abstract or else surreal. Shanghai Dragon frolics in what is quite literally a childish fantasy, contrasting with the intellectually-ambitious (but unfortunately unsuccessful) experiment by the name of Limit Cycle. Happy Machine and Deathtic 4 each depict absurd-yet-understandable fictional worlds through youthful eyes, though the symbolic narrative crafted by the former seems a million miles from the grotesque humour of the latter.

It would, alas, be the case that each of such productions fails to make for compelling viewing. One has the impression that the time constraints on these tales resulted in each being crafted to transiently stimulate as opposed to aesthetically please. Storytelling is competent where present, but little "impact" — something promised by the anthology's tagline — is imparted by the various narratives.

Genius Party is nevertheless a title I am very happy to own. Whilst I stand by the above criticisms directed towards the majority of the production, there is a section of the film which counteracts the importance of such flaws greatly.

Baby Blue, with which the series draws to a close, distinguishes itself from its predecessors in a most crucial way: it shows heart. Though it is subtle and lacking in spectacle, the believable circumstances that befall its characters bring about something poignant and memorably moving. This short work conveys the affections between its characters thoughtfully and masterfully, not unlike the films of Makoto Shinkai. (Indeed, it is difficult for one to extol its merits without drawing such a comparison.) I have never seen Cowboy Bebop, but seeing this film has been quite sufficient for me to gain a respect for Shinichiro Watanabe.

It is quite fortunate that Baby Blue is placed after the other contributions. By assigning it the role of an antidote to the prior experimentation, one comes to be more appreciative of the anthology as a whole.

I finished watching Super GALS! last night after slowly working my way through it over a couple of years. My overall opinion? Meh...I just couldn't get into it, and a I really did try. So much potential, so very little plot, such an obnoxious (at least for me) main character.

Next up will be Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's because I suddenly had a random desire to see it. Odd, because the first season didn't do much for me, but I also didn't dislike it. I'm also working on Toradora! after a recommendation from a friend. It's a lot better than I expected, and I'm really enjoying it. Somehow all the elements are coming together in a well-time and well-balanced way.

Taking full advantage of my Crunchyroll account, I found myself fishing through all of the Kadokawa stuff they've been putting up. Here's what happened:

Kiddy Girl -and
It seemed to get more watchable after those first few episodes, but its still not really good. Ascoeur still annoys. I'm about halfway through but I'm not sure if I'll finish it. I found it kind of cheap how spoiler[Trixie's and Troisienne's powers somehow transfered to Ascoeur and Q-fuille.] Rolling Eyes

Good Luck Ninomiya-kun
Oh man, what a stinker! At first it seemed like it might be more fun than it's ilk with how the lead male is actually pretty dashing and tough, but then enter the succubus lead female, and let the suck-fest begin. Seriously, she has zero personality and is pretty much completely useless. And its continual unfunny small-breasts-jokes got old before they even started using them. Not continuing.

Venus to Mamoru
Yeah. Another stinker. Only this time I only watched 2 episodes before running away. Nothing more to see here, folks.

Magician's Academy
Completely dumb, but it knows this and revels in it, therefore its a fun fun silly willy diversion. I enjoy Suzuho's need to communicate by means of cue-cards, does well for the stereotypical shy girl character. One thing I will say though, is that it really over-uses the otaku jokes.

Canvas 2: Niji iro no Sketch
Nothing special, but not bad. Usual "girl is sad and dependent on her onii-chan and secretly loves him" stuff. I might continue with it, but I read a spoiler that suggested thatspoiler[ the male lead ends up choosing his cousin, and that upsets me as I find her to be way too child-like for a sane grown man to be attracted to.]

Demonbane
Now this one I enjoy quite a bit. The whole dark, gothic nature of it satisfies my Heavy-Metal nature. I also think its pretty rad how most of the male characters look like 80's Death-Rockers. One pretty funny moment was pretty early on when spoiler[Al was giving the obligatory plot-info-spill and Kurou slowly sneaks away and drives off in his car]. Kind of what many viewers would like to do during such scenes Wink .

That does it for my CR-binge, now for other stuff:

Koe de Oshigoto
I have to thank Key for calling my attention to this when he talked about it briefly in the character-guessing game thread. Oh man... basically it's about a woman trying to make her innocent 16 year old super-virgin sister into a seiyu for eroge games. It's actually kind of cute, but... there's just so many things about it that are just wrong. I found myself laughing at times where I'm not sure if I should be laughing. For instance, in this not safe for work scene dealing with eroge acting techniques. Fun stuff.

Sky Girls
I'm only about 6 or 7 episodes in, but I already think that Sky Girls shoots Strike Witches right out of the sky. They actually made a pretty believable military set up for this one. They take us through training, they address the issue of moving at high speeds with nothing sheltering your body, and the girls are actually allowed to wear pants Wink . Its actually been really tame in the fanservice area which I found pretty surprising. It's inevitable that this will soon put the girls in actual combat, I'm interested in seeing how they'll handle that.

Evangelion 1.11
First half: "Okay, this is nice, but... I've already seen this."
Second half: "Wow, that was a fantastic climax there."
I loved it. The image ofspoiler[ the devastated sniping area and Shinji desperately struggling to muster up every scrap of will-power and force himself forward with that music playing] was rather epic. I'm definitely going to try and see 2.0 in theaters and am definitely picking it up when it hits the shelves.

That's all/enough for now...

Finished off Master Keaton today. I thought it was going to be more of a struggle with it's episodic nature and 39 all but stand alone episodes, but it more than kept my attention. I guess I just found it genuinely interesting. Keaton is just a really well rounded character and the settings throughout Europe in the late 80's early 90's felt refreshing. Some of the episodes were a little too predictable but they all had their charms. I liked it a lot.

Finally got around to watching Koi Kaze after that. Have had this for a while as it seemed a must buy, but never got around to watching it. For being such a taboo subject I never really had an issue with them being blood siblings, I did find myself having some issues with her being 15 and him being 27. But, this is a story of love overcoming such boundaries and who's to say whats right or wrong. The series was excellent. I felt the color pallets were spot on for the moods they were trying to achieve. spoiler[Overall I was hoping to see them actually confront their parents, but it still had a nice ending.] It truly was a beautiful story of finding your happiness and living by your own rules.

Next up, Hmmm... I tried sola, hasn't grabbed me but I intend to continue at some point. Probably Paranoia Agent will be next.

Is this a one episode OVA. I'm sure you don't know if there will be more, but is this one episode pretty self contained? I, too, became intrigued after watching the trailer and hearing Key bring it up several times, but I don't want to watch one episode now and then have to wait months for the next.

I recently went to a screening of Summer Wars since a friend kept asking me to see it. Earlier last year, I saw it for free and met Mamoru Hosoda at the Q&A session shortly after the movie. Still nevertheless, I enjoyed the movie. I did constantly reaffirmed that the money spent on the ticket could have went towards the Blu-ray. If you have the chance to catch a screening, I highly recommend it.

Funimation's is strongly pushing for an Oscar nomination and I would like to see Summer Wars on the ballot. During the movie, I noticed one grammatical error in the subtitles during the screening.

Recently due to the loss of my job, I have a lot more free time. Since I triple dipped for Kanon (Kyoto Animation), now is as good as anytime to watch it. I just finished episode 18 and am liking the story a lot. It is just really hard for me to explain. The only thing I can say is that Kanon has its own charm that keeps me watching it all the way to the end.

The most recent episodes I watched were heavy on the emotion factor. These are serious events that build up over time. It just seems out of place after an emotional/crying scene, the catchy J-pop ED abruptly starts.

At times, there is no other way to describe the girl's actions than cutesy. I have finished up the Makoto, Mai, and Shiori arcs. The Shiori arc especially overwhelmed me with so many girls at once. So much moe. With six episodes left, two girls' arcs left, how will the series end?

There are things that we are not meant to understand. Mai is the typical aloof, apthetic, Yuki Nagato character mold. I will never understand the appeal of this character archetype. Of course, Sayuri is the ditzy and cumsy airhead that refers to herself in the third person. How does this stuff appeal to people?

At times throughout the series, the female characters seem vulnerable thus the moe factor is achieved. To this day, I can barely recognize moe but it has a distinctive feel to it. It is even hard for me to put it into words. That is the mystery of moe.

If teenage Japanese girls did all this moe stuff, would it be moe? My take on it is no. What works in anime stays in anime. This has no bearing in the real world.

Why has Kyoto Animation fallen into the moe trend? All their talent and we have K-On!, K-On!!, and their what-seems-to-be new moe series (Daily) for Spring 2011. Even I am not immune to the moe that is known as K-On! There is one character ...

With all that, I did enjoy Yui Horie and Tomokazu Sugita's performance in Kanon immensely. It is just that they bring out the charm of the series. Yui Horie can do cutesy very well and just that uguu. I heard about the series because of uguu. So it all works out in the end.

I watched Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu the other day(waited for my new monitor to come before watching it) and I was pleasantly surprised. The movie is better than the tv show. The execution and fluidity of the storyline was pulled off so much better it really came off as a polished idea whereas while the show was good it seemed really awkwardly constructed at times and like they didn't know exactly what they wanted the show to be.

I finished Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru and Oreimo also which I thought were enjoyable throughout.

Well, it's more self-contained than say, the first ep of Aki-Sora. It has a definite arc that rises, climaxes (LOL!), and drops in just this one episode. The manga has 4 volumes in Japan, though I have no idea how much this episode covers. But yeah, it concludes at a decent, satisfying place (though I'm sure the main character was much more satisfied than the viewers. You should get what I mean by that after you see it Wink ).

I finally got around to finishing the last 4 episodes. Wow... I knew it was inevitably coming to a spoiler["it's them, or us!" kind of conclusion, but I did not expect that everyone would lose]. There were some questionable things though; like why did spoiler[the Kirishiki guy kill the jinrou girl?] Was there something I missed? And the death of spoiler[Megumi...] wow! That was brutal and almost hard to watch. A pretty big downer of an ending, but still excellent nonetheless; they didn't go the cheap route at all.

The reason was that Kirishiki was spoiler[human and Natsu bit him, thus putting him under his hypnotic control. He then told him to wait there and shoot any jinrou that came by.]
