Anyone remember this manga magazine that Viz use to put out? That was my favorite manga magazine ever created! These are some of the manga titles they featured in PULP:
-Even A Monkey Can Draw Manga -Dance Till Tomorrow -Cinderella -Short Cuts -Banana Fish -Bakune Young -Uzuimaki -No. 5 -Pheonix These were some of the best manga titles ever. Sadly, there is a slim market for those into contemporary adult manga. At least Viz is still releasing these and similar titles in graphic novels. |

PULP indeed had some great things. Good articles too, though some of the writers could be a bit snobbish, but that didn't happen often from what I saw. Only Banana Fish is being republished in a new format right now (I suppose because its shojo/yaoi), if you don't count Phoenix. I would like to see Dance Till Tommorow reprinted, along with Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga (I heard that there is more in Japan that hasn't been published here). There were great titles, but there were some that I could care less about (Vouyers, Short Cuts though it is funny in small doses). The best would be Black and White I suppose.

Last I heard Viz announced that some of the pulp titles were being reprinted. I KNOW I saw Uzumaki, my fave Pulp title, mentioned.

Yea, I posted about Uzumaki a while ago after I heard the information, but it was suppose to come out in September. Typical Viz.

Eh, couldn't be worse than Gary Groth's "This is the first comic worth reading in the history of comics!" introduction to the second volume of Love and Rockets. |

I never read that, and from the description I don't want to. But it usually wasn't like that. Sometimes some of the writers (they had guest writers alot) would seem to dismiss anything that wasn't mature/intellectual/weird. I remember this one guy openly said anyone who drew errotic pictures of women was a pervert and didn't deserve to write manga, or some crap like that. If I recall, he said Shirow betrayed scifi manga by putting out artbooks
 . Another thing was a lumping Oh My Goddess! in with ecchi romances, despite the fact that there is virtually no fanservice in OMG. I think the guy called it pointless/substanceless...yea, its pretty obvious that he either read only the first couple of chapters or didn't read it at all (I am a fan of more serious manga myself, and I find OMG to have some of the best and most original writing in all of manga). I can't stand people like this, especially when they try to be humorous in their snobbery. But the majority of the articles in PULP were not like this.

Love and Rockets is the Biz-omb, and way better than 99.9% of all other comics, manga or otherwise. Groth certainly doesn't think it's the first good comic; he has too much appreciation for the truly great comics of yesteryear. |

Hey, I'm not arguing about the greatness of Love and Rockets, it's definitely one of my favorites. My beef is with Groth. He spends the entire introduction talking about how proud he is of the Hernandez brothers for writing something that he doesn't hate, and how proud he is of himself for publishing it. It feels really condescending and that pisses me off, especially since he could have written something interesting about the immense influence the comic had.

I do agree with the comment about the adult-themed manga market to some degree. However, my friends and I do read a lot of older-themed manga. That is mainly because we are all around age 18.

Its not that the market for those types of manga has shrunk nessisarily, its just that other markets like shonen and shojo have expanded to much that its much more profitable to release those titles. Darkhorse still has success with its more mature manga, but even then its only for a few titles. The others only have smaller but devoted fanbases. Viz continues to release things, but not nearly as much as they used to.

Pulp was awesome. It was my personal favourite monthly, then when that quit, Raijin became my favourite, and now they tanked, too. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of other stuff and support it but those two anthologies were my favourites in terms of more adult themed (adult doesn't always mean smut)
