Well, can't say that I'm surprised. I even think it will be better in the log run. But, seeing as I have every issue of Ranma in comic format, I'm a little sad to see it go.

I'm glad that Viz is getting rid of the comic book format, as I think the graphic novel format is a much better way to read manga. It just takes to long for the story to come out in comic book format since you get 30-40 pages for one issue. And it's cheaper to buy a 300 page graphic novel at 9.99 than a 30 page comic book for 2.99. Im not ragging on American comics, Im just saying that manga is better suited for the graphic novel format.

I think it's sad for collectors. I don't buy single comics but I always feel slightly sad to see the poor art scrunched into graphic novel size. I sometimes buy the Japanese "phonebooks" but I don't like how the paper they use soaks up the ink and makes the hiragana "cheat sheet" next to the kanji hard/impossible to read Sad . Full-size comics on decent paper is the best of both.

I got rid of 90% of my regular sized manga, and replaced them with the graphic novel versions. [only thing I've kept are the early OMG issues; their covers are AWESOME!]

So the discontinuation of this format isn't a surprise to me. Most buyers that I know of prefer the graphic novel format over the comic book. It saves a lot of space, and you accumlate the issues faster.
