A lot of the singers and bands that do get invited have sung anime songs; they just have audiences beyond that niche as well. From last year's list, I see:
Ayumi Hamasaki (Inu Yasha)
Angela Aki (Space Brothers)
TOKIO (Kodocha)
L'arc-en-Ciel (DNA^2, Rurouni Kenshin)
Ikimonogakari (Naruto)
Nana Mizuki (don't know,but she's #3 in the poll)
