Well, you probably need to give us some clues about your tastes first. What do you like? Romance? Action? Comedy? Slapstick? "Deepness?" Angst? Pop-culture? Samurai?
Then many other experienced posters (and manga readers) can give you some pretty reliable pointers. |

There's a lot of manga out there and not all manga reader enjoy them equally. So it definitely would help if we know what type of manga you're looking for first. If I had to generalize the popular types of manga for newbies, it would be something like:
Shonen Manga: These type of manga are aim at boys, but anybody can enjoy them too. There are many type from sports, to action/adventure to harem/comedy. Shoujo Manga These type of manga are aim at girls, but anybody can enjoy them too. There are many different type of shoujo from magical girl to Action fantasy. Seinen manga Aim at an adult target audience. Usually push the boundaries of manga because it doesn't have age striction. Yaoi - Which is basically boy love. If you're still not sure, there's always the Best of 2005 thread and the Top 10 Favorite Thread, which you can use to learn more about the manga. |

Oh right..sorry..guess I could have been a little more helpful with the topics. I'd have to that say an action/adventure title would be what I'm looking for mostly, although I really like anime with deep plots and tragic endings...if you have any ideas on series that combines the two then it would be extremely helpful[/i]

Trigun - really detailed art and a good mix of humor, drama and action. Plus, the first book is nice and thick.
Good anime to start with as well. Love and peace! |

I recommend Rurouni Kenshin. It has all of that and more. The anime TV series is also great but the OVAs, which are called Samurai X, are not as good in my opinion. The art of the manga and the TV series are great and so is the story line. |

Beat me to it KittiCatt.
I'd have to suggest GTO - Great Teacher Onizuka. Although it doesn't have much 'adventure'; it's got plenty of action. The book stars Eikichi Onizuka, the baddest twenty-two year old virgin former gang member around, who aspires to become the greatest teacher in all Japan. It has great characterization and lots of humor and action. Solid book. If yer really looking for a tragic end tho', try out Magic Knight Rayearth. The book isn't very deep, it's pretty by-the-manual actually, but the twist at the end is nice. |

If you can take heavy violence and nudity (and some explicit sex), then give Berserk a try. It's a medieval fantasy manga about a man out for revenge against Demons. The first three volumes are so-so, but volume 4 is where the story really begins. Volume 10 was just released and the series is still going in Japan with 29 volumes so far. You'll have to wait several months between volumes until volume 14, as Dark Horse has announced that they will release volumes monthly after that. I highly recommend Rurouni Kenshin, a story about a samurai who has vowed never to kill again but is continually pulled back into fighting to protect people. It is 28 volumes total with volume 24 coming out in a week or two. At this point in time, it is also the only series that is released monthly, instead of the typical bi-monthly or quarterly release. The three most popular action/adventure series right now are Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece. My personal recommendation of the three is Bleach. It is about a high school boy named Ichigo Kurosaki who, due to his high spiritual sense, is able to see ghosts. One day he meets a Soul Reaper girl named Rukia and he is forced to become a Soul Reaper himself to protect his family from spiritual creatures called Hollows who feed on Souls and people with high spiritual energy. Naruto is pretty good as well (especially if you like ninjas). It is about a young boy named Naruto who is trying to become a ninja. He has no family and is shunned by the village for reasons he doesn't understand. But this won't stop Naruto and he intends to eventually become the next Hokage (the best ninja in the village and the leader). I don't care for One Piece but if you like pirates, you may want to check it out. All of these series are quite long and still going in Japan. Naruto is up to volume 8 in the U.S., with 9 soon to be released, but it is over 30 volumes in Japan. Bleach is up to volume 11 here, but nearly 20 volumes in Japan. One Piece is up to volume 9 in the U.S. but over 40 volumes in Japan. Another good action/adventure manga would be Samurai Deeper Kyo. Here is a link to the publisher's page with plot details. |

Well, Saikano would only fit one of the above categories (well two, depending how much you stretch it).
This is not a an action/adventure. This is a tragedy/tragic love story. While I cannot really say the plot is deep, the character development is amazing. It calls in many moral questions too. But it is extremely disheartening because this is an extremely sad story. |

I see that Trigun has already been mentioned - it has a great story, tear-jerking ending, lots of action and comedy - it's actually one of my favorite anime's and manga's. Next, I would say that Hellsing is a really good choice. It was my first manga (I'm a newbie too

Wow, a time traveler? What year are you from? Seriously, though, I just wanted to point out that the Trigun manga has not ended yet. As for Gungrave, this is the manga forum and the thread is asking for manga recommendations, not anime. |

Correction! Yaoi is boy boy sex love porn. Shonen Ai is boy love. I'd reccomend... Um... The Wallflower? |

Actually, yaoi covers both. Shonen ai tends to refer specifically to the non-porn, but yaoi does cover both. In the same way, Yuri covers both explicit girl-girl sex and sweet lesbian romance. |
