I've written a review of Jill Thompson's "manga-style" Death: At Death's Door for Broken Frontier. Is it true manga? Can anyone other than series creator Neil Gaiman faithfully write the Sandman characters? These questions will plague scholars for centuries. Me, I've mainly just ignored them.

Check it out if you have time. Thanks!

Well, it really can't be manga if it's not Japanese... Teen Titans, Samurai Jack, and most of Tokyopop's Rising Stars of Manga people may be anime or manga styled to most Americans, but like Tokyopop's Rising Stars of Manga rules states, there is no set manga style. Manga is just Japanese comics... if somebody drew a comic in Disney style and called it manga but their comic didn't originate from Japan, it wouldn't be manga, but if it did originate in Japan it would be manga. Not to diss any of those mentioned shows or comics or anything... I really liked Rising Stars of Manga, especially the "Little Matchstick Girl" adaption. Oh yeah, and if 3 different people can do Terminator and keep it tied to the same storyline, then someone else can faithfully write a Sandman story.

so if an american went to japan and created a comic book it would be classed as manga? i dont really think its the art that makes things manga, or where its from, its the story most manga i have read have very different storylines to american or british comic books, and thats what i think makes manga what it is.

I haven't picked this up recently, but in the process of looking over my old comics I've fallen in love with Jill Thompson's art, so I'll set aside my usual indifference to Amerimanga and check this out. Jill Thompson has done one or two other Sandman spinoffs is various cartoony styles, but I never grabbed a copy, which I now regret.

I read it a while back, but I can't say I really like it. While it takes on a manga-sque artstyle, it seems to try too hard and comes out awkward. It was alright, overall, but it would've been a little better without all those different fonts. I know it is supposed to represent the actual voice of each character but I prefer the font to be neat.

I'm a big Sandman fan so I was sure to check out this book when it was released. I thought it was fantastic, not because it is drawn in a manga inspired style, but because it is a good Sandman tale. Jill Thompson works hard to manga-ize this story though, adding in all sorts of stereotypical manga elements.

Bottom line though. It's not manga. It's a good story.

You can read my review here.

Keep up the good work on Broken Frontier.

I've read it before. Here's my review: I didn't quite like it. I found the artwork distracting.

I personally liked it alot. Nice little story and cute art. You obviously can't come into it expecting the Sandman all over again. Of course I like her other art better, but it's nice to see her change style to fit the story. Her Little Endless storybook is fun with really nice art.
As for Amerimanga, most of the stuff the blatantly tries to emulate manga rubs me the wrong way, but many artists are able to adapt elements of manga to their own style (most of them draw for comicbook companys, such as Oni Press). I really love Adam Warren's art (the Dirty Pair is good fun, and his Gen 13 spinoffs were a blast).

Bought it when it first came out since I'm a giant sandman fan, and loved it. I don't suggest it for any non-sandman fans though, and I definatly wouldn't use it as an introduction for the sandman series, which I think they're trying to sell it off as to get people in the manga community into it.

Manga style Dilerium was worth the 10 bucks alone for me.
