Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san

Plot:
Quote:
Takurō Mukōjima is an angler boy. He often lands a mermaid named Muromi-san and has a chat with her and her strange friends.

Just realized we don't have a discussion thread for this show, though there really isn't much to say about it. Personally, I think it's absolutely hilarious and a great way to spend 12 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. As of episode 5 we have finally met all five mermaids, and it's really hard to pick a favorite.

I've been following this show for awhile although it's not a smash hit or anything for me this season. I just watch it for the giggles and a way of passing time on the weekends.

Some of the mermaids are cute though~

Bamboo is right about this show floating dangerously close to crossing the line into the just plain annoying zone. The only thing that keeps me coming back (plus only possibly wasting 12 more minutes of my life) is the fact that I want it to be cynical and twisted and for the most part it satisfies that. It's just the delivery seems kind of lame and poorly timed, it needs to have jokes that reminisces of earlier moments or that just right amount of repetition rather than constantly poking in different directions.

I really got to admit, the characterization is a bit too rough and deformed for my tastes, we don't get too many shows about mermaids so it would have been nice with cleaner designs. But I also admit if the show is going for un-fairytale-like as possible the art is a good fit.

Plus Chiwa Saito AND Yukari Tamura, two of my top 10 fave seiyuu, are in it? There's no way I can't watch it.

I assumed that we did not have a thread because it was really a short series, being only half as long as a normal anime episode. Although seems like it may be a good thing in some ways as it stops the episode's main gag from getting too old, and despite the half length there are a lot of funny stuff.

We have had Mermaid comedy before with Set no Haneyome, but there is a different, in some respects it feels closer to Nyaruko-san, the non-serious tone and non human characters make them rather similar. That opening song is really good, the catchy tune and silliness are enjoyable, I have to watch it each time, and sing certain parts of it.

There are plenty of highlights through the first 5 episodes: mermaids being spoiler[hooked by fishing hooks and lures], spoiler[Leviathan's dark] past, Hii-chan's spoiler[miss exposition parts (similar to the Japanese version of Clippy]), Muromi's spoiler[hatred of dolphins], Harpy's spoiler[differences to what you would expect] and of course the egg bit. And there was the 5th episode that gave a surprisingly good laugh at Takurou's plan D and Muromi's spoiler[skateboarding] mermaid bit. Also surprising that Fuji-san was not being a passive aggressive ojou-san but being rather sincere, or as sincere as someone who can look like this.

And there is also that kind of funny gag where they give various animals human voices, which means you can have a cicada being a human voice shouting "buzz buzz".

Ep 5: Well we have a definitive answer why Muromi's tail is so ragged. If she is relatively lacking in vanity about her appearance, why would she give the size of her breasts a second thought? Especially since larger ones create more drag in the water.

Yeti is cute, I love her nose.

I surprisingly find myself looking forward to this each weekend. It seems the hit rate of the gag/joke for me is about 50%, but when they hit, they are out of the park.

The mushroom bit this week was great.

"Oh yeah, that's poison!"

Episode 7

At least another guy in the series, even if he spoiler[scares the heck out of] Takkun. A very awkward scene at the end with the spoiler[rubbing of cucumbers].

I was also kind of thinking of spoiler[mandrakes] when there was the spoiler[screaming mushrooms], seems it was what they were going for. spoiler[They got high]. Anime dazed

Somehow, I get the impression the writers do big bowls of 'shrooms to come up with their ideas. As goofy as this show is, it actually does have some impressive educational content, normally. I usually learn some aquatic facts each time out.
