Point is - this fandom over individual series comes in waves. It'll die out soon - just like the 2004 Tsunami.

That's a truly tasteless example to use, but apart from that, I agree. I find exaggerated fandom annoying, no matter what it is. I can't stand it when people seem locked into a view of anime fandom that requires them to compare (and in comparing, denigrate) everything with their current obsession.

So even though I personally rather like Bleach and FMA, I find the hyper-fans of these series to be very annoying. Contrarily, even though I don't particularly care for Naruto or Death Note (I liked it to begin with, but it rapidly became uninteresting), I don't mind sensible conversation about them. It's the hyper-fans I can't tolerate.

Of course, as KyuuA4 remarks, these things come in waves. It used to be DBZ or Neon Genesis Evangelion or other anime, now it's Naruto and Bleach. A couple of years from now, the same type of fans will be obsessing over something new.

As an aside, I might observe that the degree of "rave" connected with an anime is also proportional to its exposure. When a series is unavailable in the US, it generates less attention from the hyper-fan types. On the other hand, series that air in the US tend to produce a lot of obsessives. I don't know... maybe there's a correlation between exposure and obsession, as if the obsessives are actually timid types who are afraid to interest themselves in niche art, but only feel comfortable in lemming-like hordes that all agree that "NARUTO IZ DA BEST EVAH!"? There's comfort in numbers.

Given the friends I have, I am VERY sick of hearing about Naruto. My college's coffee lounge is basically one big, non-stop Naruto conversation, and many of my friends (well, former friends) will bring in that damn Gamecube game and play it to the point that they're skipping class several times a week just to have some extra rounds of it. Day in, day out, it's all nothing but Naruto, Naruto, Naruto, Naruto, Naruto, Naruto, NARUTO. And I wasn't that keen on the series to begin with (after the Chuunin Arc, it lost a lot of its appeal), so you can imagine how irritating this became after a while. And no, they're not former friends just because they like Naruto, but because they're letting that damn series consume their life to the point of utterly alienating themselves from anyone that isn't as obsessed as they are.

I thought it happened only in my college something like this. So I'm not the only one who passes through Naruto hell, the way I started to call it. Seriously now, everytime I sit in the coffee lounge or when I'm on the hallways, people always talk about Naruto, which I wouldn't mind so much if...they would talk about something else too. But this is all I can hear them talking about. If they think it is great and I ask them why they like it so much, they simply stare at me like I have asked them a stupidity. A valid answer would have satisfied me. Or sometimes when I'm hearing them saying it is the best anime ever ( Shocked ) and I asked them compared to what? I get again the staring but no answer. And they are college students. Supposedly they are educated people who are able to give you the answers that you want.... or not, in my case. For now, I have stopped to watch the series till this wave fades away.
As for Final Fantasy... well, I saw most of the parts but they didn't make a big impression on me. I don't like them very much, don't hate them very much... They are just out there.
Full Metal Alchimist... Actually, I didn't watch this series but seing it so many times praised on this forum I had the tentation of watching it... which materialised last week. I'll talk about it when I finish it.

Why wouldn't it be right, exactly? And why aren't you explaining why you think it's the best (yes, why you think it is, because it's far from a factual statement), and choose instead to spam this thread?

You wouldn't happen to attend The Art Institute of Atlanta, would you? Because this description matches the student body here ideally. Laughing

Man, I just wanna see the end of the awfully bad Naruto and Bleach Cosplays that seems to populate every damn con. In fact, FF, FMA, Naruto, and Bleach all seem to have their fair share of really bad cosplay.

Naruto cosplayers either stem from the completely lazy to the completely demented.

It seems a popular gripe about Narutards is girls putting on three cotton balls and calling that a "Sexy Jutsu" cosplay. I mean, i've seen a minute ammount of "good" Sexy Jutsu cosplays (i.e. doing spoiler[Naruto's transformation with Kohaku when both go into the female side of the bathhouse] is the best i've seen, and thats only instance i've seen of a very good Sexy Jutsu cosplay) and the rest is half-assed cottonball/quilters batting/packing material cosplays.

The other end of Naruto cosplays that I hate is the whole "Random Chunin background/personal fanfiction/whatever character" cosplays. A headband and shurikin do not make a Naruto character. And don't get me started on "Black Gai." He just bastardizes one of my favorite charaters from Naruto in a way that...saying racist remarks than just commenting on how his cosplay is bad would be much, much tamer.

Bleach cosplayers are equally as guilty. Too many bad Soul Society cosplays and not enough variety. I have yet to see a cosplayer do Yachiru Kusajishi or Soifon decently. I've seen one great Yoruichi Shihouin, but others don't even come close.

Of course, only one other cosplay is much much worse than those two....L from Death Note. Just because you can go emo and have a white shirt and jeans does not equate an L cosplay. It may look stupidly simple, but still...

I just recently came back from anime expo in london where all they praticly sold on the stalls was these three animes, even the games section was playing the new naruto game, and there were no cosplayers (asides from the power rangers lol) that werent dressed differently.

Now im not trying to say they are bad shows or people should watch somthing else. Im just saying that these shows are everywhere and its getting a little on my nerves. Just wondering if anyone else felt the same?

Final Fantasy--- I really enjoy the games. Now, I fully admit they are rapidly losing their pizazz and are getting very monotomous. The visuals may be pretty nice but the gameply aint anymore. Seven was just over done period. I was always a much bigger fan of the older FF games and out of the newer ones 8 was the only 'great" one I think.

Naruto--- Yea I really am. The manga is decent and I don't mind reading that. The show, it makes my soul hurt. The whole craze right now is just pissing me off. Everywhere I go it's more freakin Naruto. God I am so tired of hearing about it at cons and in all the stores. Just like how last year was all about FMA

Full Metal Alchemist--- despite the blurb on my last paragraph I actually like FMA. I just started watching though. I could not watch it until recently because of how everyone wouldn't shut up about it. Now that everyone focuses of Naruto I can watch FMA in peace. Not top 10 material but still very enjoyable.

Bleach--- I really like the manga a lot. I'm pleasantly surprised with the anime so far. I don't have high hopes cause most shonen jump titles suck once they hit anime form. So far so good though. Maybe everyone will be too busy with Naruto to make this one suck and ruin it with over marketing

Well, I have enjoyed most of the things mentioned here. I like certain Final Fantasy games and have completed several of them more than once, I have watched quite lot of Naruto (although as filler arrived it got put on an indefinite hiatus.) Bleach was really good as well and I need to catch up with it again. I'm reading FMA rather than watching it so far, but I may well get round to it some day.

However, none of them are the bestest best things ever and I don't go on about them. I'm not really exposed to much fandom so I don't find the hype too annoying. (The UK is an anime black hole, so I don't notice a significant following for Naruto or anything, and thankfully this forum remains Narutard free, so there aren't too many posts about it.)

Well i too am from the uk and i did start this topic so it would be silly for me to agree with you. I think because naruto has just started airing on jetix on cable. Things went a little nuts, dont you think?

You guys are freaking me out...when I was in college (graduated in spring) all I heard was FMA this and FMA that. Then in my last semester I started to hear rumblings of Naruto fans. I saw the wave coming and ran for my life, diploma in hand. The real stupid part, the fans were the same for each show. "Naruto is da shioat man, it rocks. It's the best anime ever!!!" But wait Jim Bob, didn't you say that FMA was the best ever last semester? "That was last semester man, get with the times. FMA is so 20 minutes ago. All otaku know that dude" They also do say dude by the way no joke, and I live in MD so why the surfer lingo beats the hell out of me. That's the most annoying quality of these hyper fans, they focus on one series but once it's over it's like it never existed. They couldn't care less about it once the new "best anime ever" comes out. I started taking the long way to classes to avoid the cafe areas where they congregated. They also freakin used up all the damn bandwith so I could never get any good connections. If you're gonna run your mouths turn your damn laptop off!!!

I disagree. Sort of.

I agree that there are people like that. In fact, there were anime fans a few years ago that were mad that anime in general was becoming popular. But they were the minority.

And today, I'm sure the people you are describing are also the minority.

As a long-time anime fan (15 years now), I can truthfully say that I have never been bothered by anime's growing popularity, and I would be ecstatic if one of the "hidden gems" that I like so much somehow gained positive, wide, mainstream notice.

Of course, there are some negative aspects to the growing popularity of anime, but they are unimportant, dare I say negligible, when compared to the positive aspects. The most apparent positive aspect is of course the increasing availability of anime. Shows like Naruto help make the licensing of shows Haibane Renmei possible.

As for the topic starting question:

No, I'm not the least bit "sick" of hearing about these shows. Yes, I do get sick of people who bable non-stop about certain shows, and in Nagisa's position, I would be sick of hearing about Naruto from those particular people. But I think we're dealing with a loud and annoying minority of the fans of these shows. Not every Naruto fan is a "narutard." Even the most obscure shows have over-the-top fans, I'm positive there must be one or to "Haibenetards" in North America. The popularity of shows like Naruto, and the demographic they are geared towards, just makes for more over-the-top fans.

I'm an avid anime fan, racing fan, and gaming fan. I can't stand any person who talks exclusively about any one of those topics. But that doesn't make me sick of hearing about them...

And I was expressing mine. Don't act like what I'm saying is some angry statement thats limited to what you're posting in this forum. I'm sick of people in general that complain about popular things because they're popular. If you found some actual reason to say you don't like them other than "this show has too many fans" then maybe I wouldn't feel the need to sound off like some angry dick that complains about complainers.

Ok yea i respect your opinion and i suppose i did fail to mention that i am in a very similar position to Nagisa with one exception i never did get rid of those friends. However them caring more about those particular animes and games than our friendship. I find it very hard to discuss anything personal in my life with any of them because the only communication i can get in on is about a particular episode of Naruto or what the new Naruto game will be like. It's hard for me to explain and i suppose i should have mentioned it first really but i cant really put it in words. They are just becoming less my friends and more focused on other things.

hope that made sense.

Laughing Do people actually speak with dude? But unfortunately for me, I can't escape them because there are some years before I get my diploma. I just came from the college and I had the funiest and saddest scene in my life. Two girls on toilet seats, discussing through the separate wall about how sweet is a guy from Naruto (forget the name though; it's a shame). My last refuge is terminated. Crying or Very sad
Generally I don't mind people saying about a certain show that it's the best thing they have seen but to talk on and on about the same thing, without any strong reason to support your ideas other than "people say that's so cool", "it's freaking me out" or "that guy is so sweet" (I thought that this applies to school girls, well, not anymore), it's not just driving me crazy but it also makes me feel angry, really angry. I would like to have a decent conversation about anime in the coffee lounge or on the hallways (or for crying out loud, on the toillet seats Embarassed )without being obliged to hear about this show on and on.

I don't know anyone else who are anime fans, so I don't hear about series that I don't buy.

I watched the first few Naruto episodes, but since I really don't like shonen series I had a hard time getting through them. I assumed that Naruto, like Dragon Ball, was more a middle/high school show than the college age bracket. Maybe I'll watch the next batch of episodes.

I know nothing about Bleach. It sounds like another shonen action series in the manner of Yu Yu Hakusho from what I gather from this board, but I could be totally off. I will find out soon since I preordered the first DVD.

The last Final Fantasy I played was FFIX. I actually recently bought a PS one for this one since I played VII and VIII on my PC. I found out last week that XII will be coming out soon because someone mentioned it at EB as I was picking up the newest Guild Wars. I might buy a PS2 someday, but don't usually like console games. FF Unlimited was painful to watch.

I just recently showed all the FMAs to my roommates which they enjoyed. It gave me an chance to hear the much talked about dub which I rarely do. We are now in the process of watching Gundam Seed, which have to many of my favorite Seiyuu to watch in English.

I assume a good part of your annoyance is from other fans that you know, since it's hard to find information about any series unless you actively pursue it. I really don't know anything about Bleach even though I watch a dozen anime DVDs a week. Maybe I should go to a convention since it's been about 10 years since I attended one.
