I just recently picked up a Newtype magazine and it came with a sampler disk for Final Fantasy Unlimited. I was skeptical at first but decided to pop it into my PS2 and see if it was any good.
It started out a little weird and boring but quickly became interesting. Here's a summary of the episode I watched.
Summary:
One day, the black pillar appeared suddenly in the Sea of Japan. That is a gate which led to the another world, and monsters have invaded into our world from there. Dr.Hayakawa who was famous for the research of the crust energy went to another world with his wife Marie, and they had come back safely. And, they wrote the book " Kairetsu no hi ( Day of the field row ) ". After that, they never came back though they went to another world again. Their twins' child Yu and Ai went to the station of subway which had been closed. According to " Day of the field row ", the train which goes to the another world comes at midnight. To search for parents, they tried to take this train. At night of the full moon, the train for the another world arrived at 0:13:13. Yu and Ai boarded the train. And as follow Yu and Ai, the girl named Risa also took the train. Who is she?
Has anyone else seen this series in Japan and what do you think of it? Is it worth looking into?

I saw the first episode on The Anime Network and it seemed pretty good. From what I hear though, the series pretty much sucked in Japan and was a big failure. (Of course, that usually means that it'll be a hit in the US *giggle* ) I'm waiting to see a few more episodes before I solidify an opnion on it.

I'll forewarn you not to buy it if you like a story half done. It was intended for 2 seasons but never got there so almost everything is unanswered, just tellin ya in advance.

I have seen the whole series and I thought that the CG was excellent as were the character designs. The story was interesting at times and the magic system was kinda cool too. I personally enjoyed the show but it's not something that I would watch again unless I had nothing else.

What can I say, I liked it. The wolf girl was my favorite character.

*Still doesn't see why some many people like 7.* I figured they gave out SNES with a copy of Final Fantasy 4 (2 in the US) and 6 (3)
Anyhoot, I enjoyed so far what I have saw of the series and too bad it didn't do as good over in Japan.

I have to say, I certainly enjoyed the first episode despite it having no info on what the rest of the series is going to be like
The only gripe I could actually have about this anime would have to be the animation style. I mean jeez! The art style looks older then Gundam! But the 3D animation was quite good.

My understanding was that it wasn't so much of a flop (or it would of been cut off very early), but the anime would only go on for as long as Squaresoft gave funding to Gonzo. And then what happened to Squaresoft? They died. And then became Square-Enix. And then FF:U wasn't important...
but you're right, I think it might be a sucess in the US, because everything is scary

Err, there's a lot of things wrong with what you said.
1. The series was canceled before merging with Enix, not after.
2. Square didn't die, it just shifted from one merger (EA) to another (Enix)
3. They canceled the series because they felt they should stay truer to their roots and concentrate on only games, thanks to the failure of FF:SW and Unlimited being poorly recieved. It's likely the only reason they're doing the FFVII movie is because it's directly related to a game, they can probably do it in their own facility (rather than an animation studio, or a seperate movie facility) and probably do it cheap using existing hardware and software they're using for the games (I'm sure there's a reson why the CGI looks similar to that of FFX).
Unlimited was fairly expendable and likewise discarded by their new standards.

Square will likely continue to put out CG movies to some extent, considering they built that CG studio in Honolulu for FF:SW.
I wouldn't doubt if that's where the CG work for most (if not all) of their games is done now, and they probably lend their facilities to other companies wanting to do CG work. I mean, its a huge complex IIRC, and they're not likely to let it go unused.
Hell, I think it even housed the families of the animators since they were working there so much. I could be mistaken, though.

Hmm, I was of the understanding that Square sold the studio to Sony, but I'm having trouble finding the specifics. They lost around $50 Million on Spirits Within, I doubt they'd take a second chance at another big film, and it would take several small projects to get them back out of the red so selling does seem reasonable. I do know that Square Japan said they would only partiallly be funding the studio at one point, they were on their own for the rest.

You're more than likely right. I only know about the studio from reading about it when the FF:SW website came about a few years back. I never kept up on any details about it, I just assumed they might have moved all their CG operations there. But, selling does make a snootch more sense.
