I don't think DVDs are particularly expensive. I think that had little, if anything, to do with the price jump. Either they A) all the extras stuffed in with it caused the price increase OR B) they were required to charge more for the broadcast order (or had to in order to recover extra costs for it as they may have had to pay extra for it). In either case, the extra disc probably had jack to do with it.

Due to a week of not visiting forums much (that includes ANN), I only just now found out that the DVDs are being released in chronological order (it's true; I didn't read the thread until now, but besides posting the updated thread guide I haven't posted in here at all for the past week and I also haven't gotten around to updating the thread guide to recent discussions, so I suppose my conscience is clear). Bad marketing move, I agree, but seems like I got my wish, so I personally am happy with their decision. Can't say the same for most Haruhi fans; I sensed quite an uproar here by skimming posts so I guessed that something like this had happened but didn't find out which "Bandai screw-up" had occured exactly until now.

And here I thought there'd be no chance of me ever seeing DVDs in chronological order, not that it's THAT huge of a deal... Cool

Yeah. The SHnY LE boxes 2, 3 and 4 have the special Broadcast order DVD's. I mean, they are kind of cheap considering the contents:

Disc 1 Special Edition ($64.98)
Discs 2 Special Edition ($59.98)
Discs 3 Special Edition ($59.98)
Discs 4 Special Edition ($59.98)

So yeah, makes sense to me. Music CD's, (sans character Volumes, except Volume 1, which is Aya Hirano, the voice actor for Haruhi), Pillowcases (wtf?), Pencilboards, Iron-on logos, a Haruhi hairband, plus a total of 7 DVD's (if I counted right) seems like justification enough for a 245$ total price tag. Oh, and don't forget the Dan-Cho armband.

I just pre-ordered that box, bells and whistles and all. I decided I love the show too much to not get the uber-editions.

I am easily bought.

I will buy the other discs in SE as well. Usually I could care less for novelty items, but with show I almost need them.

I blame the marketing. And my own weakness.

Oh man! I was so steamed to find out that the DVD's for "Haruhi Suzumiya" will be in "Chronological Order" only! (This may be old news to many of you, but I just found out.) What the @#$%?! So much of the show's charm came form the fact that the story was revealed bit-by-bit and for much of the series you didn't really know what was going on. The whole second half of the series is completely pointless if you watch all 14 episodes in order! The "ending" would be totally boring!!! I can't believe they're doing that at all, let alone not giving the viewer the choice to see them in the order they were intended for!!! (Except by buy a "special edition" DVD with only subs!) Someone seeing the series for the first time this order (especially after they heard all the hype) would think it sucked! Or at least that "it started off good, but was totally pointless by the end.)

THE STUDIO'S, BOTH HERE AND IN JAPAN APPARENTLY ARE BEING SOOO STUPID!!!!

Sorry if this has already been posted about, but I didn't see any recent "MHS" threads. (Imagine that!)

No recent threads? The last post in the MHS megathread was only on Friday. And there has also been discussion about the news in the Talkback section.

OK, that's true. But it was long ago enough to be pushed off the first page. (OK - I was lazy. And yes I know that sloth is a sin.) Plus while that thead (which I did honestly try to keep up with at first, but gave up a while ago) has veered all over the place, I'd didn't see any indignation (?) at the episode order being released on the DVD's. (But no - I did't read all 95 pages, or whatever it's up to now,) So I'll stand by my post here! (I wish that there had been a few different threads on the varous topics discussed in the MHS thread rather than the one mega-thread anyway. It makes it hard to stick to a topic and discuss it thorough.) Oh well.

I'm still steamed about the DVD's. Evil or Very Mad Anyone with me? (No? Oh well. Figures.) Confused

Just because it's been pushed off the first page doesn't mean we automatically stop talking about it. Especially that thread. And with that thread you can discuss anything related to HSM, even your little rant.

Like I said: I was lazy! I posted again in the talkback thread anyway. (BTW - y'all can lock this if you want. I've said my piece and I have a feeling the only responses I'm gonna get here will be more people telling me I should have posted somewhere else.)

But I'm still steamed about. I bet I know how it happened to...

(In Japan) the team was all ready to released the DVD's in BROADCAST order when one of the company exec (who never saw the series, and therefore couldn't possibly 'get it') was like "Released them out of order! Are you crazy? NO. Must be in correct oreder!" And anyyone who knew any better lacked the backbone to fight for doing it the rigth way, instead silently deffering to the guy wearing a suit. I see this all the time in my own (japanese) company - the people who know what the hell they're doing sit quietly while 'upper-manager's' make disastrous (or at least laughably stupid) decisions. They just don't feel it's their place to dispute their "superiors" - even when their managers are idiots.

(And I'm not being racist, I'm just simplifying what is a very complex cultural phenomenon for the sake of a westerners understanding of what goes on.) I just can't believe that anyone who was actually involved with the series artistically would make this kind opf a boneheaded decision. Everyone is so afraid of offending someone, or not keeping their job, or not getting the liscence, that they forget about making a GOOD PRODUCT. Which is the best way to keep your job, satisfy your customer and make the most money!

This decision will KILL the series as far as new viewers are concerned.

In the words of Napolean Dynamite: Freakin' IDIOTS!

Well I watched it in chronological order as well as broadcast, it works quite well actually, the ending is not as dramatic true, but watched in chronological order it seems to have a different meaning altogether, rather than ending on an alien, psychic magical high it ends on a 'Enjoy it while you can' high school shoujo style thing.

It's good both ways round, just another point of praise to the series that in the two orders it has different yet well done stories. It will only kill it if you've seen the broadcast order anyway and, you'll be buying the DVD's anyway (you will wont you? You've watched the whole thing DLed obviously) so just switch the DVD's around and watch it whichever way you prefer.

Plus, and this may just be my opinion, the chronological ending feel much more open than the broadcast ending. Considering there's a second season supposedly coming, having that more open and quiet ending might make people more interested in the sequel.

Well, that's just my opinion. Personally never really got the big deal with chronological vs. broadcast order. The broadcast order always just seemed to be a big marketing stunt to me.

Yeah. People are really going to be mad that there was a broadcast order different from the chronological order when they're only watching this series for the first time and they didn't even know about this issue, much less care. Yeah, people are going to be mad Rolling Eyes
