Good week for Kill La Kill and Black Bullet.
Yet again, Tiger and Bunny sell a crapload of BD but regardless Sunrise won't give it a second season. Why? Love Live has officially sold over 100k BD in the space of three weeks. It's officially the best selling TV anime on Blu Ray ever and if I'm not mistake I believe it may also be the best selling TV anime overall ever as well. But I think I may be wrong, unless someone else wants to clarify. |

I'm not sure I'd call 2,269 good, necessarily. Different anime have different disc goals depending on how other related merch sells, but anything under 3k is usually seen as pretty weak. KLK's doing decent, but has definitely slipped since vol 1.
Copy-pasting some online numbers for those curious: *1,490 *1 Hitsugi no Chaika [BD+DVD]: 2014/06/27 *1,469 *1 Akuma no Riddle [BD+DVD]: 2014/06/18 *1,324 *1 Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara [BD+DVD]: 2014/06/18 **817 *1 Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin [BD+DVD]: 2014/06/25 **,679 *1 Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to [BD+DVD]: 2014/06/25 **,362 *1 Blade and Soul [BD+DVD]: 2014/06/25 **,*** *0 Fuuun Ishin DaiShogun [BD+DVD]: 2014/06/27 **,*** *0 Seikoku no Dragonar [BD+DVD]: 2014/07/02 So, who's gonna keep investing in GONZO when they're basically a guaranteed loss? I'm an optimist. I want Kill La Kill and Black Bullet to do well because I love those shows. |

If love live was limited to one per person, it wouldnt have sold half that. But hey, works for me. I personally bought all 7 volumes of season 1. Probably this season too.

So from what I'm seeing is virtually everything from the last season pretty much flopped.

No, they didn't! Here is what each title from Spring did(Note: Manabi line is the one considered by followers of the rankings as a flop. But notice that different anime have different goals. Is Miyazaki Hayao Kantoku Sakuhin-shū (The Collected Works of Director Hayao Miyazaki) the box set that the Chage and Aska music video was hastily pulled from after Aska's arrest on drug charges a few months back?

It sold 2.9k in its first week, wk2 will easilly push it over 3k. Under 3k isn't bad, for most seasons the mean average is below 3k. Whether it will stay around the mean average(v2 drop) of spring 2014 remains to be seen. KlK is not doing decent, its doing amazing. 10k+ average is a feat not many series have reached, its roughly within the 10-15% sellers of all time.
As somebody within the sales community, I just want to say that a lot of the people I spoke do not that see the manabi line in that way, its outdated and you can't just apply a random number to determine whether something is a flop. Most of the time, we do not have acess to all of the data(manga/LN boost, disc sales, merch sales, music sales and whatever the anime tried to promote). You can still define an anime as getting 'bad' sales, but its better just to use the yearly or seasonally mean average for that.
NGE still has that title by a large margin. LL S2 will have a big v2 drop, so I don't even think it'll beat Monogatari or Madoka. If its lucky, it might beat SnK(50k average). |

@bigivel
The manabi line as originally conceived is a complete myth. As Justin had covered in a previous production article, and from insider information, and from analyzing production costs detailed in some various articles, including official sources, there is absolutely no way a show can recoup its costs from 3k per-vol avg disc sales. If one were to base it on video sales alone, an example based on a roughly middle-of-the-road cost of $150,000 per ep (I've seen lower and higher figures quoted), it would take 7850 per-vol sales to break even. But as others have mentioned, there are other streams of revenue the production committee can use, from various merchandise, books and overseas licensing. Nonetheless, shows with poor video sales can take several years or more (!) with money slowly trickling in just to break even. |

Wait, I thought NGE averaged about 100k in its initial run. Or are you factoring in multiple print runs? If Love Live S2 manage to follow the pattern of S1, then it might be able to match Bakemono and Madoka (which is very unlikely), but it should have a good chance at matching Attack on Titan unless v2-6 doesn't make any gains from the first season's respective volumes (and assuming that v7 comes close to v1's sales). |

10k isn't that good(depends on budget). It's barely "hit" status. KLK is successful, but not very successful. |

10k is great for any show. Only a select few anime from any season sell more than that. |

If making the top 10-15% is not amazing', then I don't know what is. |

So what do we make of Mekakucity Actors? It's just under the 10K line, selling one episode per Blu-Ray, but also bundled with a music CD (and from the looks of CDJapan, it looks like the whole series is going to be relesaed like this this: 1 episode and some tunes for ¥3200). Is it just a special case because of the built-in demand from existing Kagerou Project fans?

It's probably the only way they were ever going to push those discs, but I really hope the trend of selling even fewer episodes per disc doesn't take hold.
As for Black Bullet, a combined 3k just doesn't sound like anything worth mentioning. Maybe better than an average, but pretty weak. |
