I liked Saber Marionette J a lot when I first saw it roughly fifteen years ago. (I have, however, never liked the OVA Saber Marionette J Again) I even own the signed complete collector’s box that was released in 2003. When I watched all of that four years ago as part of my return to anime, it was a tedious, laborious experience that nearly caused me to abandon the whole enterprise. (I still like a lot of the performances from the English dub of the first series, especially Maggie Blue O’Hara and Venus Terzo) Even so, there’s a stupidly good chance that I’ll inflict this upon myself.

I remember J as being the second Harem comedy to get our attention after Tenchi (back in the early-00's when that was the template for them), and it just seemed like a warmed-over Tenchi with a more futuristic setting. And yes, the gay-stereotype comedy-relief character just got more annoying with successive series.

Bringing it back could either be a successfully revived Slayers: Revolution for Megumi to relive her glory days, or just a name-only title buyout after the original creators have gone, but either way, SMJ always had the feel of a show that was longer-lived in Japan than in the US, or at least thought it was.

Umm... I just went to that site. Does the original AIC still exist? Because AIC Project logo is almost exactly the same (minus having "project" added to the bottom)

I liked SMJ well enough when I watched it but it in my "anime is keen!" honeymoon and even then I could tell it was a little generic...well, at least it had distinctively exaggerated character designs.

I wasn't expecting a news like this to suddenly pop out of nowhere. I watched both SMJ and SMJ2X back in the day and listen to the OPs pretty often, but to hear a new project is in the making... I wouldn't mind a remake to be honest (just like Ushio to Tora)

The only reason for watching it back during the 90's-00's honeymoon was for watching any early comedy Megumi Hayashibara was in, but even then, Lime just seemed to be retreading Megumi's cheerily-insane Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, which...also felt a bit generic.

We didn't start considering "harem" a genre until Love Hina, but this felt like the archeological missing link between Tenchi and the later conventions of the genre.

Cool, needs an improvement. Saber Marionette J with good animation for once? Razz
J had weak animation for it time but I prefer its cel animation over J Again OVA from 1997 which I think was a completely digital show and perhaps the earliest I've seen. Sadly it really shows, it has that early artificial computer look like playing a cheap Flash game.
Hopefully the cast returns, especially Megumi Hayashibara.

Speaking of the audio. What the hell was with Bandai dubbing this series? The three seasons were dubbed by three different studios and its one of the big reasons I refuse to watch the dub. Well I did sample them and J Again by Bang Zoom sounded very good so I wish they dubbed all three shows. Ocean Studios(J) and Blue Water Studios(J to X) dubs I thought were poor.

Somebody must have wished on a monkey's paw for a 90's property to come back. The original show looked like 90's anime a la Rob Liefeld, and I can't imagine this reboot being anywhere approaching decent unless the staff decides to change just about everything (think Gatchaman Crowds).

I don't have anything to say here, I just love this line. Laughing

(And again, if it isn't a clearance-sale title-grab takeover like the newer Tenchi series, it's twenty years of the show's creators imagining it was more popular than it was.)

I don't know why the big surprise, for quite some time many franchises have been making a comeback. I do wish this becomes a nice reboot with enhanced animation and an improved script.

Hollywood has been mining the 80's, while anime has been mining the 90's.

I got that signed set as well when it first came out. Probably the last time I've seen it too.

I probably wouldn't have guessed this would have a come back, but I do remember enjoying the original series (at least enough at the time to purchase the set (and R)). Probably won't be re-watching it any time soon, so I see no reason not to check this out when it premiers.

Somehow, I have this feeling that Lime, Cherry, and Bloodberry will reappear in this new show of Saber Marionette.

AIC still exists, although they don't do much besides animation assistance on various series.

It sounds as if this might be Hiroshi Negishi (who also revived the Zero-G name for his animation studio; on the other hand, AIC Pro will focus on planning, production, and copyright management) licensing the logo and branding for his own use since AIC is mostly inactive as a main producer.
