I'm talking about animes that have beautiful artwork. The type of animes that may inspire people into drawing anime themselves. I attempt it, it's harder than it looks. . .heh heh
I mean I can't even sit through a poorly drawn anime without turning it off with a note of disgust in my voice. I have noticed, though, that there are some pretty spetacular pieces out there, such as:

Chobits, such a lovely anime. I'm not so partial to their eyes, but the cute little dresses Chii wears are exquisive.

Express your views here please.
Tell everyone which ones you think are masterpieces and which ones you don't.
(it doesn't have to be an anime you like)

Wings of Honneamise - costing 8 million dollars to produce, some of the background art is simply jaw dropping. This title really stands out for it's technical merits.

Not really drawn so much as animated, but in terms of art:

I like how Studio Madhouse designs backgrounds, shows like Black Lagoon/Black Lagoon: TSB, Monster, and Claymore for instance have some really nice scenery. They also design their characters more realistically compared to most other animes and I really like that.

Some Specific series of note:

Chevalier D'Eon-This series has some really nice looking art if you look at the buildings and their interiors. The palaces actually look extravogant and artsy with lots of fancy detail to everything.

Ergo Proxy-Not exactly the most colorful of series but I still really like the mood all the dark greys, blacks, and browns set for the show.

Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid-Kyoto animation took over the FMP franchise and this was the first one of them that they did with actual Mechs in it. The Arm Slaves are of course gorgeous but what's especially nice are the other aspects of the art. The sunrise and sunset scenes are a visual treat and it looks especially good when other objects or people are in the scene, it just looks so real.

I totally agree with the choice of Le Chevalier. Gankutsuou is also one with very grand/beautiful landscapes, architecture, transport vehicles and props. They are all digitally rendered to perfection, down to the very last details. Also worth noting is the artistic style of the show which (I dare say) is seen nowhere else. Yes I'm talking about the intricate, moving patterns that are seen everywhere in the anime including the characters' clothes and the interiors of houses. And the way they treated lighting in a lot of scenes is simply...heavenly. Enough to inspire tears. I'm serious.

Wolf's Rain has some very nice and detailed landscapes. The kind of watered-down, inky greys they use for the opening looks very natural and I love the lush pine forests that appears in one of the episodes - you can make out individual bunches of pine needles and fungi on the trees - and the sun-dappled river in another. The scenes that show the wolves running through misty snow are also well done. The wolves themselves are exquisitely drawn with particular focus on their facial expressions. The anatomy of the animals are just right and you can kind of feel how furry they are. One must appreciate how much research Bones must have done on wolves and canines in general. Another nicely drawn scene that stuck to my memory is the one showing Harmona lying down in her gown with her long hair spread out under her. I wish I have hair like that.

2 that come to mind are Byousoku 5 Centimeter and Mushishi. when it comes to scenery, mushishi has absolutely gorgeous scenery and every episode has new and different artwork. Tony K. has a post HERE with some pictures included. when it came to art class, i was thinking of painting scenery of mushishi for my project since it almost has its own atmosphere. most of the scenery is about nature.

when i first saw byousoku, my jaw was dropped and i was like holy crap! This has some of the best if not the best animation I've seen. HERES a trailer that takes long a while load but shows it in its best form. im sure it will speak for itself. at times, it would look so realistic that i would actually be stop just to admire the work.

I'd say Akira. It's not beautiful in the tradtional sense, but the sheer quality of the animation is astounding... especially when you remember the movie's age and know that all of that highly detailed motion was hand-drawn, frame by frame. (Honestly, I don't care for the movie, but credit where credit is due, ya know?)

I've also always been fond of Heroic Legend of Arislan. Once again, we have an older anime done all by hand. Yet, they take the time to do sweeping circular pans and large group battles- things common when you have a camera and a bunch of extras, but very labor-intensive when you have to draw everything. (Unfortunately, Arislan's age is beginning to show... but those pan-around shots are still pretty unqiue.)

How the heck did I manage to forget about Gankutsuou? Probabally because I was tired when I posted that. Definitely agree that it's one of the most visually stunning series I've ever seen.

In my opinion, Dangaioh has a very nice work of art and character design for an 80's Mecha anime, Toshihiro Hirano does some very nice character designs on the animes he directs, he also did the same character designs for Megazone 23 Part 1 and Iczer One

Also, you can't forget Gunbuster and it's sequel Diebuster, now those were extreamly revolution works of arts.

Are we talking about the backgrounds or the actual people/character drawings here? The thread starter appeared to be talking about the character drawings while almost all the replies have been talking about the backgrounds.

While I agree that most of the anime in the replies do have nice background art, most of them have such ugly character art that I can't even stand to watch the show.

If you're talking only about animation, then I must say Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is just breathtaking. It's shocking how much detail is involved, and the action scenes are far superior to anything I have ever witnessed.

Maybe this is just me being baised, but I loved the animation of alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist. Also, the character designs is quite visually appealing.

I would go with Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie. The character design is simply gorgeous, the colours leap from the screen (especially the red roses and this being Utena there are lots of those) and Ohtori never looked so stunning and bizarre. If not for the amazing artwork I suspect that the level of extreme trippy-ness would be unbearable, the liberties the movie takes with the events and characters on the series would probably not be at all enjoyable if not for the stunning visual quality.

Rahxephon has pretty good artwork. it has beautiful 2-D animation, interesting character/mecha designs, and vibrant backgrounds. Occasionally, it may even have a cinematic feel to it. I actually forgot I was watching a TV series when I first saw the last two episodes.

I meant characters at first but I don't see why we can't do backrounds. Go ahead and talk about both.

I also liked the architecture and backgrounds in Gankutsuou. But I was kinda annoyed at the what they did with the textures. It made me second guess wanting to watch it after the first episode. But I eventually got used to it after an episode or two.

Ones that really come to mind are pretty much any of the Ghibli films. The enviroments are just so alive. I also think Last Exile was absolutely beautiful in and out. The backgrounds were beautiful. The characters were well drawn. It had a good balance of CG and non-CG artwork. I also thought the artwork for Please Teacher! and Please Twins! were also actually really really well done. And same goes with Ah! My Goddess. Seemed like alot of effort went into the characters, backgrounds, colors, lighting, yatta yatta yatta.

Elaborate please.
Correct me if I'm wrong but it just seems to me that you judge shows based on how many bishis they have in the anime. If that's so then you're likely to miss out on some real good stuff like Mushishi, for example.

Oh Zewerr I just LOVE your avatar. Mechazawa is ALL the bishi I need! Very Happy
