Yup. Those ages are accurate. I'm sure it was worth it. It always is.

I do not know much about Limeware, but I am surprised to see Share. That software (and its predecessor Winny) has been known to be reverse-engineered and compromised for many years, and users cannot keep their identity hidden.

Imagine being the guy who got arrested for uploading Isuca to the internet. Must be awful.

For a tech savvy individual it should be easy to protect their identity, and the data that they have, from the authorities. ( See US DOJ & FBI vs Apple for an example of what happens with effective security. ) It seems these unfortunates are the inevitable exceptions and are being made examples of.

The basic problem is they are trying to put their figurative finger in the dam, but there's no dam left anymore.

I'm 57 and I gave up on live action TV twenty years ago, movies ten years ago. Endlessly recycled sitcoms, reality shows and remakes of superhero movies. Give me Anime where there are a few new ideas, the Girls are Cute, the Guys Clueless and the Colors pleasant for the most part.

If you've ever worked in an office you know the truth of the Terry Pratchett quote, "There is no Justice, there is Just Us."

Right, because using a VPN, a firewall and seven proxies is going to keep law enforcement from finding you if they're looking for you. Online anonymity is not as secure as you think. Rolling Eyes

That's the late Terry Pratchett, and no truer words were ever written, or spoke.

Japan has been running an aggressive ad campaign against uploading of those types of files for a while now. If you're not careful then they can get for downloading torrents as well. In Japan best not to deal with that stuff in any way.

Well, one that's outside of Japan's draconian grips. A Japanese VPN is not going to do a native Japanese any good, those are more for folks outside of Japan that want access to everything interesting that Japan has to offer.

HAHA, that's exactly what I said when I read through the article as well.

I would assume the thrill of pirating is what drives them. Volume 17 of AoT has to cost around 400 yen there. Hope it was worth it.

And that's really why it makes most of the list. The glaring absence of anything bittorrent suggests a lot both about their law enforcement's technical acumen as well as them just phoning it in with low-hanging fruit. "We need to show some numbers again, comb the Share since it is the only one we understand."

edit - a second glance at the pdf reveals they actually do mention bittorrent. Seems they in fact do know about the technology.
