PS2 P3 sold around 210k.
PS2 P4 sold for 300k.
By the way, I know you don't ask but:
PS1 P2: IS is 275k, and P2:EP is 100k.
PSP P1 is 150k (can't find PS1 sales).
Yes, the difference with P5 is massive.

For Atlus games, hitting 100k sales is considered hit. Even P4's projected sales was only 180k. I wouldn't be surprised if projected sales for P5 is less than 500k.

You're talking about numbers from a decade ago... not to mention, P5 overall sales vs. weekly sales of P3/P4.

But well, it's not really that surprising that P5 gets lots of sales since it's a PS4 title. Back in P3/P4's time, PS2 and PSP has long been long figured by hackers, thus the lesser sales. AFAIK, P4 has about 1.2M+ overall sales as of 2014, saw it from reddit some years ago. I dunno about P3/P3F/P3P...

Both games had the problem of still being super niche which likely had a far bigger affect on sales then your suggestion. I know 4 had the problem of coming out basically after the PS3 had already came out.

Not the number most expected. I assumed that they sold at least 3 mil. A lot of major releases on the PS3 or PS4 by major Japanese publisher were seen as flops with similar or better numbers. The DMC reboot, Bayonetta and so on come to mind. Good on Atlus for keeping the budgets always reasonably though. Even if if their technical specs tend to drag a graphic generation behind.
