A major point of interest of this anime is how adaptational it's been - a lot of Tezuka Osamu's source content has been supplemented with anime-original material that flesh out the characters more than Tezuka ever did. (The episodes with the spider lady and centipede were wholly original, while the episode with the crab demon is story-original (with original retainers) but uses an existing source character, Tahoumaru.)

This is quite the rarity in the anime industry, which tends to reward, even applaud, totally faithful adaptations of the source material, panel-for-panel, all warts included. (Even Japanese live action adaptations get more leeway in changing parts of the source for movie screens.)

That said, I could do with just a touch less misery porn. Watching Dororo's mother struggle to keep her child alive on her own is touching, but I didn't need the lingering shots of her bloody, burned hands.

That follows the source manga; don't let Tezuka's cartoony art fool you. Plus that arc WAS called The Misery Chronicles for a reason.
On misery porn, I think it's also why Sukeroku got his happy ending and got to reunite with his mother again in the anime. spoiler[Considering manga Sukeroku was killed at the Banmon,] I suppose the writers just wanted to ease the general bleakness of the arc.

And that's what makes this arc of Dororo so interesting. It paints a nuanced picture of somebody who would knowingly side with Daigo for reasons beyond just self-preservation.

Tahoumaru's conflict is anime-original. spoiler[In the manga he disliked Hyakkimaru from the start and was itching to take him down.] The anime still reaches the same conclusion, but takes a longer detour to add more depth to Tahoumaru.

Quote:
I just hope we get fewer dead moms going forward.

Lady Kagemitsu stabbing herself is also anime-original. She never harms herself in the source.

Oh man, that scene where Daigo turns around and sees Hyakkimaru's newborn body was terrifying. This show is directed really well even when the animation quality is all over the place.

I disagree that Tezuka didn't put that much thought on Dororo's gender. There's a pattern in his work of characters "performing" one gender to such s degree that they accept that gender as their own, regardless if that decision was a survival need for them (Dororo) or a choice (Princess Knight). In the original manga, Dororo simply brushes Hyakkimaru off when he mentions his "real" gender. At no point in the manga Dororo ever acts as anything but a punkish little boy and I find that really transgressive considering the time when the manga was published. I actually feel that the remake is falling too much into a heteronormative trap where it's been implied several times that Dororo is afraid of showing any signs of femininity and she might even have a crush on her big bro. That said, I agree with Nick and Andy that there's still half a season to go and there's some content left from the manga that the anime hasn't covered ye. I have the feeling the second half is gonna deviate pretty heavily from its source material and I'm so down for that. Give me the goods.

(and yes, I'm calling manga Dororo a "he" and remake Dororo a "she" because, in my opinion, that's how each iteration of the character perceive their own gender. I do need to finally finish the 1969 version to see what they did with the gender reveal there. I feel bad because I was really enjoying it, but I've never seem to find enough time to properly watch the whole thing. Gisaburo Sugii is one of my favorite anime directors of all time, he could do wonders with very little resources and limited animation)

I hope Daigo dies in the most undignified manner possible as everything he thinks he built up crumbles around him. I hope Itachi dies in an even more undignified manner, preferably eaten by a yokai while on the loo.

But anyway, this is a bleak as HELL series and really carries the spirit of the original manga. Tezuka had a very unromantic view of the Sengoku era, depicting it as hell on earth where the worst parts of humankind came to the fore. Hyakkimaru and Dororo are meant to be the bit of light in this overwhelming sea of despair. God, we're only halfway through the series. This is gonna be one hell of a ride

Where did you see that? I'm not disagreeing with you, just didn't notice a crush.
I agree that Tezuka may have put more thought into Dororo's gender, but the way most writers would write a gender non-conforming character in the '60s would probably be different from the way they'd write one today, and, as everyone's pointed out, this adaptation is taking the story in new directions, too.
My one complaint about the show is its lack of humor. Tezuka put a lot of humor in even his darkest children's manga, but this show focuses on the drama almost exclusively. It's gorgeous, though.
