That said, I could do with just a touch less misery porn. Watching Dororo's mother struggle to keep her child alive on her own is touching, but I didn't need the lingering shots of her bloody, burned hands.

And that's what makes this arc of Dororo so interesting. It paints a nuanced picture of somebody who would knowingly side with Daigo for reasons beyond just self-preservation.

I just hope we get fewer dead moms going forward.

Oh man, that scene where Daigo turns around and sees Hyakkimaru's newborn body was terrifying. This show is directed really well even when the animation quality is all over the place.

I disagree that Tezuka didn't put that much thought on Dororo's gender. There's a pattern in his work of characters "performing" one gender to such s degree that they accept that gender as their own, regardless if that decision was a survival need for them (Dororo) or a choice (Princess Knight). In the original manga, Dororo simply brushes Hyakkimaru off when he mentions his "real" gender. At no point in the manga Dororo ever acts as anything but a punkish little boy and I find that really transgressive considering the time when the manga was published. I actually feel that the remake is falling too much into a heteronormative trap where it's been implied several times that Dororo is afraid of showing any signs of femininity and she might even have a crush on her big bro. That said, I agree with Nick and Andy that there's still half a season to go and there's some content left from the manga that the anime hasn't covered ye. I have the feeling the second half is gonna deviate pretty heavily from its source material and I'm so down for that. Give me the goods.
