It was smart of them to do a little introductory game before the main one, because it serves as a proof-of-concept and lets people know that this team knows what it's doing. Way too many of these Kickstarter spiritual successors have been trainwrecks (Mighty No.9, I'm looking in your direction) so people are rightly skeptical.
(Of course not all have been bad. Bloodstained and the 2nd Yooka-Laylee game were terrific.)

I backed up the kickstarter and currently 5 hours in. I have to say that if you plan to play the main game, playing Rising is no longer optional, its compulsory. The atmosphere, characters and dialogue even with NPC feels so nostalgic. It gives you the first taste of how Eiyuden world looks like. Even at this scale you can see the richness and variety of characters (not the kind of lets turn everyone into female characters you see in many games today). And the interface has Suikoden feels to it. The only down side is just the kinda clunky combat (reminds me of PSX Valkyrie Profile, which I kinda worry about whether Valkyrie Elysium can be a good successor) and the repetitive dungeon farming. The pacing of building your town also feels a bit rushed but its tolerable because this is just a small game (some people can clear it under 10 hours).

I've only vague interest in Rising myself. I think I'll see if the main game fulfills its ambitions at all before trying an appetizer in a genre I don't really care for.

If you have Game Pass it’s on there if you’re interested in checking it out

What games are these? cause the only one that I can think of is Shovel Knight with the Gender swap mechanic and even that doesn’t let you turn all of the cast into females.
