I liked Rising more than New Challenger as it focuses on Ippo and theoretically lays a lot of groundwork for the idea of Ippo improving and being the true example of his coach’s teachings.
Unfortunately the manga took way, way too long to get to the point, and while it’s rerailed now, possibly, there’s a lot of filler and very questionable decisions along the way. I do still hope we get more Ippo now that Netflix knows it does well and they’re all about combat sports/martial arts shows, but two words: Time Skip.

I mean a time skip would only fix so much. As you already mentioned there’s a lot filler and other superfluous stuff that’d need to be pared down though hopefully not leading to weird shit like the rearrangement of the flashback with Ippo’s dad and reducing Shimabukuro’s screen time like they did in New Challenger. And even then there’s still some stuff you’d couldn’t exactly *clears throat* fix unless Morikawa signed off on it.

This commentary about Ippo getting less or more screentime... You all guys know of future story arcs where Ippo quits boxing and becomes mentor?

Yes and it seems the last three years are essentially speed running half the side stories so Ippo can realize his place is in the ring.
