Hosoda's movies had already started to flag writing-wise once he decided he was a big name auteur who doesn't need a screenwriter, and Belle was on the verge of just being visual vomit a lot of the time. But this just looks bad, like he learned all the wrong lessons from Belle

I love The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children, but after his past three films, his name alone is no longer enough to sell me. While I think it's a good move for him to try something different at this point, I'm not a fan of this animation style. That said, if word of mouth is good, I'll give it a chance.

As someone who prefers traditional 2D, this looks kinda dope to me *shrugs*

Well, he seems to be branching out plot-wise, but going for CG animation...I dunno...

When I first read the plot description, I was really excited since this is probably his most action oriented work in a while but the 3d animation Crying or Very sad ... It was already my least favorite part of Belle so it being used for the whole film is disappointing.

Well, I won't chide him for trying something really out there, and as a fan of Studio Orange, I can't say I mind the 3D look, even if it looks a lil indie for my tastes.

Personally I’m happy that he’s trying to branch out story wise. Also for 3D I thought it looked pretty good.

How dare a creator branch out and do something new and out of his comfort zone? Shame on him! /s

Also, I love how people are pretending to be shocked that it's 3D when he explicitly said his next movie won't be 2D.

He also said it was going to have a revolutionary new look, which it definitely doesn't lol

Branching out? More like Dumbing Down.

If we are gonna quote him let's use his actual words at least:
"Hosoda stated the film is not 2D animation or "Hollywood-style CG," and he is aiming for a completely new look."

Was he wrong? It doesn't look like your typical Disney or Pixar movie. The aesthetic is unique enough.

Anime fans continue to be petty and entitled. No wonder the industry is so creatively bankrupt.

No you're right it looks like it lacks what made Hosoda special in the past. For all I know he got Frozen's character designer again, who did Suzu's online avatar in Belle, or at least heavily replicated that look again (mind you, I don't even dislike Frozen's designs at all, but also don't really want that vibe in non-Disney auteur works) and the environments are just incredibly boring. One of the top comments compares it to Berserk and I mean... compare the visual direction in Berserk 1997 to this. It's kinda nothing

It doesn't feel like a "new look" either, just what "2D-like CGI" generally is these days.
