Back when the Senran Kagura games were first localised, I remember XSEED/Marvelous saying that they deliberately removed all references to the characters attending high school, because not specifying the educational level created plausible deniability. It seems like whoever worded these advertisements didn’t get that memo.

Plenty of games don't have to do that. Blue Archive doesn't have to do that and shows all the girls ages on their profiles even the skimpy bikini versions

I think that's just because games journalists specifically targeted Senran Kagura back in the day and hated it so much they went out of their way to try to stop it from being localized at every opportunity and get it banned so XSEED had to be super defensive. I remember other localizers begging XSEED not to license the games in general. It was weird times and still have no idea why Senran Kagura got so much hate

This just seems like the UK being UK. Age verification, banning VPNs, there's a lot of stuff Im reading they're doing

As a Brit I can't say I'm surprised, but a lot of other series get away with this exact same thing here, albeit without spelling it out like this ad campaign did.

This reminds me when Nisemonogatari's Blu-ray release almost got banned in the UK because the ratings board did not want to give it an age rating, which almost never happens (I assume because of the toothbrush scene).

The UK really isn’t as bad as the media and online chatter is making it out to be - there’s a lot of exaggeration out there. The Online Safety Act is a misstep for sure (my concern more being the implementation, such as relying on external companies for verification, and how that data is handled etc), but the government has not banned VPNs (and previously said there is no interest). We also tend to be more liberal in our arts than other countries like the US.

Where this game screwed up were the ads that highlighted “high school”. If they hadn’t mentioned it in the ads, the game itself probably would have flew under the radar. Highlighting charaxters like Asia who look young was also certainly a choice.

Considering it is a Highschool DxD game, there is no way to avoid highlight "Highschool" since that is in the literal title of the game/series/light novels/etc. So, they will run afoul with any ad that includes the title.

Haha, yeah, the series' title doesn't do it any favours. However, the ads themselves were shared by Anime Corner*, and one of them didn't actually refer to the series by name in the ads, and the other one was included on the artwork rather than the copy. So, probably a bit of an own goal there.

*Not sure how to hyperlink, so here's the link in all its ugly glory: https://animecorner.me/high-school-dxd-anime-game-ad-found-to-have-violated-uk-advertising-rules-ctw-warned-about-depictions/
