Funny how the removal of the manga has occurred in 'red states' that the article listed, really shows a lack of reading comprehension from the parents and lawmakers in those same states. As per usual, it's the kids that get caught in the crossfire when things get removed from school libraries, courtesy of both parents and old outdated lawmakers in those 'red states'.

I think we need to clarify what age groups in schools are seeing this happen. There is content abound that would be inappropriate for primary and secondary grades. When you get to high school ages, I would think there is more leeway on choice. However even then there is some content that is still not really appropriate for a "School" library. A good example would probably be "Assassination Classroom" as one could make a valid point of plotting to kill your teacher is not appropriate in a school setting.
I think people also need to keep in mind the differences between a "School" library and a "Public" library. |

Oh thank goodness. Now that the manga with the funny octopus teacher is gone, all those school shootings should finally stop.
They'll do anything but restrict guns. |

Clearly they didn't get the memo that the authoritarians on Main Campus are supposed to be the bad guys.

Sadly, the only way to fix the idiots in charge is for them to be willing to read. Since they're unwilling to do said reading, the kids are going to continue suffering the damage inflicted upon them. |

In most of these cases, the entire district is removing the books, so it would be all grade levels. For example, the removal from South Carolina's Horry County Schools started from its Socastee High School. animenewsnetwork.com/news/2024-11-16/assassination-classroom-manga-banned-in-south-carolina-school-district/.217950
As noted in previous threads, the story is set in a middle school, and the manga runs in Weekly Shonen Jump, a magazine whose audience is 29.2% 15 years old or younger according to Shueisha in 2020. Just before Assassination Classroom's original run, 62.9% were 14 or younger. https://adnavi.shueisha.co.jp/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mediaguide2020_PDF-1.pdf https://web.archive.org/web/20110824132749/http://www.j-magazine.or.jp/data_002/b_shuei_syusyojump.html
As noted in previous threads, there is a curveball in the plot so that a one-sentence blurb like this does not cover the actual story. |

Cool man. But aside from what Egan Loo said, wanna explain how Sasaki and Miyano getting banned fits in your logic? And if your answer is "sex" then man do I have some news for you about Shakespeare (I don't even know if Sasaki and Miyano is that explicit). |

Sasaki and Miyano is about as sexually explicit as Fruits Basket IIRC. It just goes to show that no matter how wholesome and uwu pure representation is, to bigots it's all the same degeneracy. |

The funny thing is that some of the other titles mentioned, like One Piece, Naruto and Bleach are aimed at literal children in Japan, yet they’re all rated T here.
I was watching a documentary on homosexuality portrayed in movies back in the day, and one of the interviewees mentioned something along the lines of “Americans are willing to show violence, but as soon as sex is mentioned, it’s banned” . That I know, One Piece has no romance or sex, so what’s the offense? Bleach had some fan service, and I guess Naruto would be a no go since Sasuke and Naruto kissed in like chapter 3? So what exactly would pass muster for these people? BTW, banning books to protect the kids does absolutely nothing when those same kids have access to the World Wide Web. They’ll d find the banned books and more. So they need to ban those kids from accessing the internet until they’re 45 to protect their innocence. When I was a little kid, I watched Wile E. Coyote get TNT-ed or worse by Road Runner, I guess that was supposed to be 15+ or R-18 material? There was this whole "Hello Nurse!" thing as well, or the whole song-and-dance of sexy Jessica from Roger Rabbit. This was all treated as normal entertainment for kids and we grew up fine. Why are so many people now so puritan and believers in helicopter-parenting?

spoiler[ But they do kill him in the end so it's not some fake-out plot that goes away and never happens. It's a constant plot point that stays until the end of the series. ] In no way is the synopsis misleading. There may be more to the story but this is the violence equivalent of "she breathes through her skin" to try to rationalize why a female character is always in a bikini. It doesn't change the fact the female character is always in a bikini and people who find that objectifying aren't going to care. The kids are still trying to kill their teacher (and each other at times) in a school setting. |

Part of the missing context is that one-sentence blurb is that Koro Sensei spoiler[is an assassin with alien powers who is asking the students to kill him as redemptive sacrifice.] It is not the only, or even the first, series in which a student is asked to kill their teacher in a school setting, but for story reasons that become clear later. There is an even more well-known story for children, found in thousands of school libraries, but raising that example will open another can of worms. |

Honestly, the fact that there are various queer/crossdressing/trans characters would be enough of an excuse for certain schools to drop the ban-hammer unfortunately. |
