Quality review for one of the more legendary manga of the past three decades. Really surprising that there's never been a proper mass-market Blu-ray release of the OAV, which was on regular rotation with my friends back in the early 2000s.

I just finished the original Dark Horse GN's a few months ago and must say, this series has some of the most gorgeous artwork, especially the cars and some of the greatest action panels I've ever seen in a manga. I freakin' loved it! A true classic!

On the off chance someone reading this has seen both the revised edition and the new omnibuses, is there any reason to get the omnibuses if you already have the revised editions?

I've got both, and contentwise there's not any effective difference. They're using the same translation as far as I can tell, even keeping the same interview and 4koma from the first two Revised volumes, but they do have a few color pages of art in each, largely from old covers. The primary difference is in the actual book design itself, as it is printed at the larger size like the old releases/VIZ Signature stuff, and on less pulpy paper, which makes them a lot thinner than than the Revised editions(a quick comparison here, Omnibus v2 runs about 2/3 through Revised v3). Personally, I feel like the Omnis are better quality overall, but whether that's enough reason to go for them again is hard to say. If you haven't seen them yourself, Dark Horse's Innocent volumes are of similar quality to these. Edit: While I'm looking at these, Omni v3 is solicited at 648 pages, there's 155 pages remaining in Revised v3, and 470 pages in Revised v4, so it has room for the Riding Bean chapters that were included in the latter and then some. |

Thanks for the comparisons. I missed out on picking up the Revised editions and was worried the new ones would have something wrong with them, but I'm glad to know there's no problems. Well, aside from the garish detergent orange covers...

I would imagine it would be, for the most part, a simple lack of interest from Kenichi Sonoda himself, since he'd have to sign off on such a production. To be fair, Sonoda has mostly resigned from anime & manga, since he's currently the 19th head of his family's successful confectionary shop, which has been around since 1582, so he essentially only works on stuff outside of the family business that he himself wants to do. A new anime adaptation is probably really low on his priorities list, honestly. |
