Ugh, no thanks. I don't think they could ever get it right.

Quote:
Live-action One Piece and Cowboy Bebop executive producer Becky Clements told Variety that Tomorrow Studios plans to bring in a "major recording artist early to help establish the show's sound" since the original had a hip-hop score as a defining feature.

Bring in fresh talent, artists who understand the matter and have the right vibe for that kind of project. Push some indie/unknown artists.

As it reads right now, this has written failure all over it.

Why? There's no audience for Champloo, even in Japan.

I'm pretty sure this is not correct (well, it's true there's no audience in Japan, but there's definitely an audience in the US), you might want to think about why it _seems_ to you that there's no audience.

That being said it does scream "someone's pet project" about it...

samuel: No audience, because they can't Americanize the cultural elements like Shogun, CTHD, or EEAAO.

Yeah, that's why no one in America watches anime.....?

Also let's not act like Champloo didn't get some of its own influence from American culture.

Anyways, I'll judge it on its own merit whenever it comes out. Cowboy Bebop live action wasn't great, but people seem to like One Piece, so who knows.

Wizard: Only certain anime/manga work in a Hollywood context. And you mean if it comes out.

If it's like the CB adaptation, I'll pass.

Then again, Rurouni Kenshin received a good live-action adaptation, so maybe Samurai Champloo is possible.

You mean like the wildly-successful and critically-acclaimed One Piece adaptation?

I like both seasons of OP by this studio but this is a bad idea and Shinichiro Watanabe himself has become a liability. I would love to be proven wrong but Samurai Champloo feels much harder to get right than Cowboy Bebop, which I deemed unwatchable.

One Piece succeeded by committing to the bit to an almost slavish degree. I don’t think they will with Champloo given its firm history with 2000s hip hop culture slamming into Jidaigeki tropes.

And I love Champloo, but I feel like they would be better off getting something more of a spectacle with themes that aren’t part of a specific style.

Welp, here's hoping for more of a One Piece than a Bebop. Hopefully Watanabe being more involved steers in that direction.

I haven't seen either, but based on how they've been received, I'm surprised to learn that the same studio produced both the Bebop and One Piece live actions adaptations.

From what I remember of it, I imagine that Samurai Champloo should be an easier series to adapt, at least on paper.

Yeah, because the Cowboy Bebop live-action series did so well. /s Rolling Eyes

Idk. I mean good luck to them, but yeah... we'll see I guess.

Regardless of what they do, I hope they have some sort of nod to, or at least an In Memorium mention to Nujabes - he might not be around anymore, but his work is what I most associate to the work, even if he was only a part of the tapestry of the show's sounds capes.
