Episode 12 (finale)
Okay, I have been watching this ahead of its official English release, and it certainly has been an interesting one. I would say that in a number of ways it is so bizarre that I could put it alongside the troll series Pop Team Epic, where its dark comedy elements can have graphic violence come out of nowhere and be treated like normal. And more cannibalism than you might expect. But the whole chaos of the series has a sort of charm that even as someone who can have a weak stomach to mindless violence and stuff, actually came to enjoy it. Just learning to kind of sit back and enjoy the wackiness, the absurdity of everything. Like I don't remember an explanation of why everyone wears random masks, from just bags on their head to what appears to be a cooked turkey, but I kind of got used to it. The craziness was just something I learned to love. And I am not sure if any character displayed the craziness quite like Ebisu, who was just weird at first with kind of the only real sort of feminine body, and also a lot of hurt. But she just kind of became hilarious and weirdly cute, as much as it also wanted to make such things clash. The whole show feels like this weird clash that is oddly nice to watch, I think the OP got some attention, but I think the EDs were the ones that best showed this feeling of: "We know we are weird and maybe technically limited in what is possible to have on screen, but F you if you think you get to decide what we are." And for that reason I think it was the third ED (there are a number) that was my favourite in how it used the weird mixes of limited animation, some pretty imagery, and the villain cast with their team pet as focus. Like the characters are kind of dancing with their hands in the air with the pet also doing so, but it is pretty clear that the pet is just doing it because a bug is flying around. To me that ED almost feels like a microcosm of what interests me about the series of the series in general. That you have this whole bunch of disturbing stuff, but underneath it you have this maybe authentic kind of nice stuff, but also understand that a lot of that nice stuff is kind of like a lie to tell yourself so everything feels a little brighter. You probably should find something that is true simple and good, but when everything is messed up you should just take what you can get. Not like I think that is something profound that represents real life, but it is kind of fascinating to look at for a bit. That also between all the craziness of this show that can at times feel like random for its own purposes, even if entertaining, there can be these little threads that move the story forward, and maybe even genuine moments that feel all the stronger because everything else can be chaotic and messy. The series is so odd that instead of what would be a preview to the next episode you instead get words that may describe things in the episode you just watched, with the series name for what is next, like saying who knows what is next. My rating will be Very good (8/10), a very unique experience as an anime viewer. Shocking! |

Super looking forward to this! Gotta do a S1 rewatch first, though.

Found the original and merged it. I think I was on forum sabbatical back then, which is why it never got added to the Index.

This is going to be one of those very rare occurrences for me where I'll be watching an anime adaption having already read the source material. I knew nothing about the manga when the show came out in 2020 but I watched the first season and loved it. So much so that when I had a chance after that to buy all 23 volumes of the manga in one fell swoop, I jumped at it. I really like the choices that were made when adapting season 1, so I hope that continues. Naturally, I intend to spoil all major plot points as we go along, heh-heh-heh... I KID, I KID!!!

Thanks Tony! You're Terrriffic!
I love the casting in this and it's especially fun hearing Takagi-keiji with a lizard head. I also enjoyed all the various references, from its foundational reliance on Alice in Wonderland to the Skarsgård version of Pennywise. Haven't had time to dive into S2 yet. Preview Guide makes me think I won't be disappointed. |

I'm going to have to rewatch season 1 before I try this too. I remember watching because I loved the world building and the look, but I've forgotten all kinds of character stuff because the overall storytelling made me kind of drowsy and distracted for some reason.

I'm a little more than halfway through the rewatch and super loving it! I'd forgotten what a brilliant job MAPPA did bringing this world to life. That's why I will always love anime more than manga: the use of color just makes a huge difference to me. Love the story-telling and all the crazy characters. Can't wait until I'm all caught up and can dive into S2. I'll be going out of town for a little over a week starting tomorrow which means I won't be able to watch stuff on my bigscreen. So likely I won't get a chance to start watching the new season until I get back, because there is no way I want to watch this on my 13-inch Mac screen.

S2, 1–3:
Six years. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN, MY GUY. I miss all of this. The nonlinear, intertwined storytelling. The gore. The morbid, twisted sense of humor. I can question the sensibility of everything that happens, and still enjoy whatever I am watching. But god, you made me wait six years for the second season. C'mon now! I'm not watching a lot of shows this season, but this will be one I'm following. Even the OP and ED alone are enough to keep me hooked. Everything about this show is strangely addictive, like LSD in anime form. Keep it coming! |

Ep 4
Ok, I was lost right from the start of this ep. The last I remember seeing landlady was she was carting off Ushishimada so the others could remain in their house. How did she die?? When did she die? I mean their antics trying to make it look like she died in her home were morbidly hilarious, but confusing. Ok, I looked it up. I guess Risu accidentally killed her, which doesn't sound like "natural causes" as the cross boys described. Poor Asu. Yikes, that was brutal. |

Killing the landlady, trying to stage her death, and then trying to steal some of her stuff while at it? This is the kind of dark comedy you don't really get in anime. Yet, this is the kind of humor you would definitely get in a crime comedy. If you try to ignore the Beetlejuice-like setting and sorcery aspect, you can see how this is essentially a crime comedy, and I wish there were more crime comedy anime out there. It's so weird yet refreshing. |

I'm finally all caught up on the second season and loving it! So far all the strands are making sense to me, but I remember from the manga there will come a point when I'm gonna be going, huh? A lot. Hopefully the anime adaptation will smooth some of that stuff out. I sure hope so.

Nothing to do with the episode per se, but I've been wondering what the best way is to describe the show. It's still a crime comedy with magical elements, but thematically, what does the show remind me of? And then it clicked: it's Beetlejuice. There is no other show that comes close to the weirdness of this show, other than that show. I only watched the 1988 movie, and man, that brings back memories. |

Strap yourself in, ACxS, because this show is gonna get A LOT weirder as it goes on, assuming it sticks to the source material, which it mostly has been so far (from what I can remember).

I have actually never seen this show, but just watched the first 8 episodes of S1 and think it's pretty awesome, so far. I can't believe there aren't more people talking about this.
The world of the series has such a unique fantasy/supernatural dystopian vibe to it. The gore and the humor very much remind me of (The) Boys in how depraved, weird, and yet morbidly hilarious it is. And Wataru Takagi plays Caiman? Motherfreakin' Onizuka as a badass lizard-headed, gyoza-eating goofball?! I'm just sorry it took me 6 years to find this out! At this rate, I should be caught up with S2 by some time tomorrow. If there's anybody else out there who hasn't seen this, yet, it's another top-tier MAPPA production that I highly recommend. |
