That sure was a great episode in that it gave Yota some much needed depth and attention while also making the relationship chart between the 4 main characters one hell of a mess. Yota his situation is not overly complex like him being in love with his stepmom or anything but not feeling like part of the family is tricky. Divorces can be messy and leave scars.
Romance wise I have no idea how things will end up, plenty of wrong assumptions are being made about who likes who.

Yah, this was probably my favorite episode thus far.

I'm more than halfway through six different high school romance anime and on track to finish them all this season - which is at least three times as many as I can recall watching all the way through in any recent seasons. And I'm still not sure where I'd place Ramparts of Ice among the spring offerings thus far. In the middle? Certainly not at the bottom or the top.

This show is certainly the most well produced of the lot. Gals Can't Be Kind to Otakus had a major attack of the still frames yesterday, for example, which is rarely a good sign. But Gal's Can't Be Kind to Otakus is never a slog, and sometimes the pacing of Ramparts of Ice can feel a little glacial, pun intended.

On the other hand, the characters feel more realistic on this anime than on any of the other high school romances of Spring 2026 (though I don't enjoy it as much as I enjoy the sometimes disturbing, sometimes hilarious antics of the nutballs on Kirio Fan Club), and when progress is made on this anime after episodes of wallowing, it strikes a deeper chord than most of the other shows. So, if patience is required, it's also rewarded as it was this episode. This could be one of those shows that patiently build up to a more powerful ending than anyone expected.

My ship sunk, but I am becoming pretty happy with the alternate pairings, with Koyuki and Yota being friends, and the chemistry doesn't need to be anything more. Added on that Minato is doing better (ironically for being awkward), and Koyuki is less guarded with him.

I don't know if I was missing something at the end, but was it really supposed to be shocking how Miki was acting? Maybe I forgot that she had only allowed herself to look reserved in front of the girls. I don't even understand that it is anything like extreme.

Miki wondered if Koyuki likes Yota because she thought Yota was better and Koyuki wondered if Miki likes Misato because she thought Misato was better.

The show wasn't subtle about what the girls were thinking. Yota thinking Koyuki was being forward with Misato because she was only doing it to be his wingwoman, though... and then Miki breaking in to shot herself in the foot by playing cupid... I'm guessing she's doing it again. I have never said anything about Igurashi because we were only getting enough information to get the wrong idea but after seeing Ihurashi hold Koyuki's hand in the classroom is suggesting something more complicated.

And now there will be rumors about Miki and the two guys... It's shaping up to be a replay of the middle school incident, only now focused on Miki.

I don't think it's because her brief flash of being rowdy at a distance. I think who's she is doing it with is more important, the girls calling out both of the guys by name would be something of a hint.

I'm so bored.
Not only the direction here lacks energy making it harder to become invested while watching the episodes, there's too much drama... for too little drama.
Nothing really interesting going on with the characters while they ramble some super basic reflections. And it's dragging, hard to believe this is from the same author as Seihantai while the "dramas" didn't dragged nor where supre dramatized like this.

After a Yota episode it was seemingly time for a Miki episode. I liked the resolution in that Miki gave the friends she truly cares for a chance with showing her true self and letting them react to that. If they had reacted negatively then it would indeed have been time to cut them off but doing so before even talking about the situation would be premature.

Rip to Yota btw, some of the comments that Miki made were painful.

The first half of the show was taxing, and the second half the show was easy to watch, and it feels like I've experienced this with the show multiple times now. I feel like a fish that's being reeled in....fight, fight fight...slack, slack, slack...fight, fight, pull damit!...slack, slack, slack,.

Haha, yep. We're on the fast train to pain town at the moment. Or some similarly excruciating metaphor.

Miki being oblivious. Minato getting every sort of wrong idea. Koyuki shipping hard but probably futilely. Yota just... being Yota mostly. And yearning.

Nice little character arc for Miki though. Sure she's brash, but she's got a good heart. Everyone (except that apparently toxic middle school class) is happier when she's open about that.

So little of this show is fun. And everybody is super articulate and insightful about what their problems are. And everybody is super articulate and insightful when commenting on their friend's problems. Yawn.

Yah, it's like a dry cookie with just enough really good chocolate bits buried in it here and there to make me shrug and keep eating.

So where are you on your anime regimen, pard? I'm behind on some shows I legitimately like and hope to catch back up on at some point - Even Replicas Fall in Love, Marriagetoxin, Witch Hat Atelier, The Classroom with the Witch and the Black Cat, Re:Zero, Agents of the Four Seasons - just because the weather has gotten really awesome after months of yech in my parts, and I've got something like the opposite of agoraphobia.

The problem is, I just found out that we're not going to have a two week - or even one week - break between seasons again. I wonder what the reasoning behind that is?

That's usually the time binge some of the shows I got behind on or rewatch some old favorites.

Where I Am in My Anime Regimen

I'll finish this up, but man are we ever far away from We Are Polar Opposites. My fave parts of this series are when the characters are SD (Super Deformed) or Chibi... not sure which is the right term.

I love how Miki is a slow motion car wreck and if she/s not careful, she'll take her real friend group down with her.

Miki at the end: "No, everyone else is wrong, I'm right. The real me is blonde now. Deal with it." I expected her to show up with black hair so if she's done with being the school idol, she's going gyaru? Miki: "Yeah!"

She doesn't need alone time with Yota, she needs an intervention.... I mean she is super articulate about... I can't even finish this take

This is pretty fair, but I've somewhat been enjoying thinking about it in terms of this being an earlier in career work in contrast to polar opposites. That- basically- has exactly this pattern, but its snappier moment to moment writing and no-drama approach completely sold it. Here, we alternate between these insights and misunderstanding/emotional drama and it doesn't scan the same.

I may be jinxing things but episode 9 felt like a turning point with going from mostly drama and some slice of life fun to the opposite. I say that because the 4 main characters finally seem like a proper group of friends with everyone feeling comfortable with each other. Besides Miki slowly killing Youta with her comments that is. The Igarashi thing was handled a lot more calmly than I expected, no major drama thus far though there will surely be more to it later on.

Welp, at the very least, I now know the author wanted me to think that the whole "keyring for unlocking hearts" visual metaphor was meant to be off-putting.

My biggest like about the show continues to be the characters who didn't just fall off the trope truck.

My biggest gripe about the show continues to be the pacing and the telling versus showing ratio.
