i honestly don't think the switch 2 is for me...the console isn't really selling me on its games, and the games that look cool (to me) like mario kart world, i don't really think are worth buying a $450 system.
i was humoring the idea of buying one for my sister - she uses her switch a lot lately for animal crossing and the recent tomodachi life game - but yeah...it also doesn't help that i have a steam deck and a ps5. if i wanna play games on the go, i use the former...if i wanna play zenless, returnal or ryza dx, i have both on ps5. i know zenless is coming to steam so, so maybe i'll be able to play that game on deck properly...
but yeah, hate the current climate of gaming...makes me wonder how the steam machine is gonna fair or even the ps6...
i know all of this was EXTREMELY opinionated, but i just wanted to say my opinion on the switch 2 as of right now...
then again, maybe japan got hit harder than most, because the switch 2 in that region costs more than the cheapest ps5...(59,980 yen for a switch 2 vs 55,000 jpy for a ps5 digital). i know we don't have it much better, but still...

Yeah, the price increase sucks, and yeah, prices will not go back down. I do give Nintendo some credit in comparison for the lead time and opening up options on bundles in case you didn't care for a particular bundle offered.
I didn't buy a Switch 2 right at launch, but I did get one last year since I took Nintendo seriously when it said the price wasn't going up "for now" and the price of all the other hardware did increase. Sadly, we are now in a world where waiting for a discount is gone and the launch price is the lowest price.
One of the more amusing aspects around the Switch 2 price lately is that prior to this, investors were questioning why Nintendo wasn't selling it for more. When the increase came, that shifted to wanting to know why they did it when increased prices means less sales.

I feel silly that I have a Steam Deck and a Switch 2 as I'm too depressed to actually do anything with them 99% of the time, but at least getting the latter at launch when Target finally got some put me ahead of the curve.
I personally would go for the Switch 2 between the two, the Steam Deck is fun to customize but a little bulky for casual use. Though the Sw2 is bordering its length...well, the Steam Deck doesn't have Pokopia. I put more time on my teal Switch Lite than anything.

-Switch 2: Yeah, to be honest I find a lot of the shunning of lower-priced consoles has come from elitist sectors of gaming like Digital Foundry basically reducing everything to numbers and polygons. It's why even when it's explained the screen wasn't an OLED was to keep the cost down, you still get these tech junkies pouting "Well they should have put an OLED in anyway..." It's the realm of people who don't get realities of consumer electronics that are focused on a larger populace.
It's an insecure obsession with "we must have the cutting edge at all costs!" even if it causes the industry to shrink to cater to the impossible to please standards of a bunch of well-to-do tech junkies. It's where we get "60 FPS should have been the standard by now!" (not understanding what would go into that) when in fact 60 FPS has never been the standard and no one at large is clamoring for it. It's where we get people whining about fruit texture in Three Houses, clearly not understanding that those weren't meant to be looked at up close and in detail. It's where we get this AI apologia (which I'll remind people Nintendo has no interest in) where people gas up a horribly inefficient and just altogether terrible yassification filter. Sure, gaming gets yanked out of reach for people, but at least you don't feel insecure about playing games meant for children when you're 30.
-Takashi Tezuka: Ah, what a legend. Hope he enjoys himself in retirement.
-Sega Super Mode: Gee, almost like GAAS is a concept that has run its course
-Harada: Well, I'm, definitely not asking you for shit because you ain't shit, Harada. I doubt this amounts to anything in the long run considering how Saudi money has been drying up for investment. They just terminated their golf league and that "city of the future" they were gassing up has been abandoned. Not exactly a place for long-term investment anymore

That Switch 2 + Pokopia bundle is tempting, especially since the clock's ticking until Wind and Waves hit. I finally got around to clearing Z-A and had plenty of fun with that.

I know it's not an anime game, or even a Japanese-made one, but I think Forza Horizon 6 deserves an honourable mention this week.
Was I expecting all the little Initial D references? Of course. Was I expecting to jump into the first proper race and hear Yoasobi's Idol (the first Oshi no Ko OP) on the in-game radio? No, that one caught me by surprise.

That makes it even more interesting. They almost had to with the Initial D stuff, but that other feels like they are very aware of who is looking at this game (in a good way).

I also had the Fire Emblem Awakening 3DS! I love that era of game where more detailed 3d models started being on Nintendo consoles. It took me forever to actually convince myself to save the money but it was worth every penny.
I have seen pretty elitist language around certain tech. People will often complain about the low end tech "holding back the game" or otherwise preventing developers from making a good game. I see the same thing with with complaining about port quality. I don't mind people being critical, but there are too many times the critical comment has a time of condescension. Things like why would they bother making the game for that system at all if it looks/runs like that when plenty of people are happy to have the chance. I would know because I played E33 on a Steam Deck and before I optimized it the picture was not pretty, but I still had fun. It feels ridiculous people seem so offended by lower end systems at times because selling for as many systems as possible is often why games get such big budgets.
There are always games that push a system to the max, but if every game was like that then budgets and prices would have ballooned even more. Just ask the cost of GPUs and RAM right now, regular prices went up but the boutique high end components and PC handhelds really went up because it caters to a small crowd which means manufacturing cost changes hit them harder. I also love a game that pushes technology to its limit like some of the gorgeous ports on Switch 2, but most games are going to cater to a broader audience and the fact both Microsoft and Sony have a low end and high end console is pretty solid proof of that. I don't know why that's such an offensive concept for some.

While this is a fair complaint when you see some of the ports of games that have been made for some systems and how ugly said port looks or even plays you do got to ask the 64,000 question of why was this made?
Granted games being ported to every system and in turn having one or multiple jank ports isn’t as much a problem as it was in the old days but still.
Like would the world had collapsed into entropy and despair if Capcom didn’t make an iOS port of the Resident Evil 4 remake? Would Namco had been hurting for money if Mappy didn’t get that MZ 700 port?

Funnily enough, there's something everyone who's ever complained they were "held back" has in common: that their ideas sucked or weren't interesting. It's the cry of every sore loser and pedantic, boring dweeb.

I really don't see why it's such an insult or big deal to some people if a company doesn't want to try to port their game onto a system like the Switch. Given how low third-party sales tend to be on the Switch I really don't see Tekken 8 possibly selling an extra few thousand copies on the Switch is a monumental loss or something worth losing sleep over. The only way I can see it being such a huge deal to someone is if someone only has a Switch and that just absolutely refuse to play a game on PC or PS/Xbox which I can see being a thing give how many people just buy games for the sake of buying them to fill out a Switch collection rather than actually playing them. It's just weird to see it reach the "I don't know how much the awful MK1 port sold on Switch but I'm sure it's worthwhile" of pure speculative glazing.
Nagoshi Studio's sudden erasure from existance is disappointing but probably not that surprising. I'm starting to wonder if his departure from Sega/RGG wasn't a sign of things like what happened with Inafune and Capcom and how that ended up turning out for the proposed fan-favorite developer. RGG at least put out Kiwami 3 to much success and praise so they seem to be doing fine without him at least. By comparison Harada seems to be trading up.. Here's hoping he doesn't become a Nagoshi himself but I have faith in SNK given they've actually been putting out good games lately and aren't a fledgling studio like Nagoshi Studio was.

The Japanese language only release of the Switch 2 is being increase from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980. The multi-language one will remain the same price. Japan is also having their NSO subscription prices increased so Japan also the JP-only playing card stuff is being increased as well. Japan is arguably getting the worst hit here with a triple whammy.

While I understand on a logical level that consoles will likely never dip below $400...yeeesh if that doesn't feel like a lot of money to fork over right now. And that's not even touching on my current backlog. Maybe I'll just wait out this current gen for a good long while again and jump on it right as they announce the next one

Yeah, I don't mind port criticism. I just tried to play Bioshock Remastered on it and due to it being a SW1 version it was falling apart at the seams. It was flickering on the hacking mini game and pause screen as early as the second area. That one went beyond a compromised image and I would never recommend it to anyone, but if it was your only way to play Bioshock I'm sure it's still nice.
Those criticisms and ones that focus on image quality don't bother me, but the constant dismissal that comes with them is more irritating and elitist. I'm never bother by people saying it looks bad and they wouldn't play it, but then we get into accusing the low end consoles of holding us back or mocking the very existence of a port when their PC can hit 90fps native resolution or whatever and it becomes less about a criticism and more about a pissing contest. I don't even mind when people say they are excited to get to a new generation and drop old tech, it's just the more sneering attitude that somehow the people who enjoy or want such technology causes harm to gaming more generally that irritates me.

Personally I get bothered more by the tone and elitism of people against ports they admittedly don't want to play. Mentioning it in reviews is one thing but I have seen people repeatedly complain in regular conversation threads about ports they don't intend to play or discuss outside of a drive by "wow this looks horrible."
The author did point out that it was purely theoretical, but the fact the multiplatform game sold a good bit more is something. It could just be that Mortal Kombat is a bigger name example, however companies have said they appreciate the extra sales. Capcom said they were happy with the sales of RE9 on SW2, because even though the PS5 sales dwarf the SW2 (last I saw it was 15%ish) the add on sales were enough to push numbers even higher and well worth the cost of development. Square Enix similarly said they a going to focus on bring more titles to the system recently.
I think at least some of this is due to the meteoric rise of SW2 in Japan, according to the most recent famitsu numbers the PS5 has sold 7.5M in Japan through its entire lifetime while the Switch 2 is already approaching 5.5 million at less than a year on the market between the added sales, purported ease of porting from Capcom, and the massive popularity in Japan, anyone looking to sell to the market should at least consider the SW2 for reaching that many more people. In another year simply having a SW2 version will likely double your potential audience (although who knows what the Venn Diagram looks like).
