Might be a good time for me to finally watch the original series plus The New Files, some slice of life fun plus mechs sounds good.

So is this just a 24 episode series broken up in to 8 films we've been seeing with Star Blazers / Yamato xxxx?
I'm curious how this relates to the previous series. Is it a reboot/new universe with familiar faces, a sequel to a previous series, or something completely new that's meant to stand on it's own? |

it is actually an 8 episode OAV, released as 3 threatrical films. it comes across as a standalone sequel as far as i can tell, but with a completely new cast of characters. hopefully there will be a few surprise cameos from the other series/movies. keep in mind that ezy takes place 30 years into the future as compared to the original patlabor films/tv series so the original characters would be quite a bit older in this new ezy timeline. |

I was under the impression this was a continuation of the TV timeline (TV series > New Files OVAs > EZY), but I don't know if that is a mistaken assumption based on people seeing TV as the "Kazunori Ito leaning Patlabor".

I wonder why the reviewer doesn't compare this new Patlabor anime with the classic Oshii movies and OVAs? Wouldn't that be relevant?

Because as a standalone series with its own unique cast of characters that takes place literal decades after the original series it should be able to stand on its own? I get being curious about how it compares to the OG stuff, but I don't think it's required for a review of EZY to have it be compared to the OG, especially when none of the OG cast apparently even appear in the stories covered in this first compilation movie. |

Thats not true in terms of the original characters. Shigeru Chiba has returned as Shigeo Shiba, and seems appear often in the first few episodes, plus there are two additional members of the SV2 who make cameos, with one voice actor from the original series making a surprise appearance at a recent talk segment post screening. Having said that, I think you could easily watch all 8 episodes without having seen any of the previous anime. However I'm surprised the reviewer seems to have little to no knowledge of the franchise and seems to be unaware that all of the original creative staff including Kenji Kawai have returned to create this new series. Oshii is the exception, for a number of reasons. |

My dad would really like to see this if we got an English dub. Is there going to be a normalish English release and dub?

Don't think we have. I suspect it's due to two reasons: 1. It just released in Japan. 2. It's a more obscure title in the US. Would not be shocked if they kept it a Japanese-only release until whenever the announce the home media release in about a year's time. |
