Lol Not exactly. The arc has already quite explicitely mentioned one of the possible deadly options (Shaula, if a rule is broken) and demonstrated another (the miasma below the tower). Not to mention, yet another threat, which was supposed to be a secret at this point, has also already been revealed in the anime, but as you're not supposed to know about it, I'll keep my lips sealed for now.

Well, after this latest episode, have I got news for you | Yeah, thanks, I look forward to it! I was getting a little "put out" at Subaru's change and it was interesting to see that maybe someone was setting up to "ease into" the reveal this episode and that there is a narrative purpose at play rather than the adaptation team thinking fans liked Subaru better in S1, so they changed the character...

May I be the only one who didn't mind S1 Subaru much?
He might have been deeply flawed but I found his performative antics entertaining and he already had a good core - it's the Subaru Rem feel in love with afterall. There was enough good about him that he was corrected, not abandoned.
That said, the stinger left me with trepidation even if this amnesia seems planned, because losing progress just sucks in general.

Ah good ol' suffering and restarting Re;Zero is back with a vengeance this season!
Now that said this amnesia plot is giving me BIG speculations!
For one, as this story is all about curing Rem and perhaps even our boy Julius so that everyone's memories come back, it make TOTAL SENSE for there to be memory wiping shenanigans at work and I LOVE that the writing is making that thing a central point after building up to it since season 1; and in fact, I suspect Subaru's Return by Death ability is actually intertwined into it in a BIG way as to why he remembers while everyone forgets as he rewinds time!
But that is NOT ALL! I am now starting to think that Season 1 Episode 1 Subaru was NOT the first time Subaru appeared in this world! And that he actually is the master of that tower, and he has been in this world for a very very long time, and that he simply forgot about it, perhaps deliberately for a reason, or in the event something goes wrong he end up resetting his memories to his newly reincarnated state as a default. So the Subaru that Subaru doesn't remember is someone significant being in this world, perhaps even a villain in a certain light.
That would be an amazing twist if this is where the story is headed!

Fyi everyone crunchyroll mistranslated the final line in front of the door and basically had subaru translated as saying the opposite of what he said in japanase for the subs and english dub.
My guess is that the translator wasn't given the recorded dialog but a script and that script was missing a word that inverts what was written in the rest of the sentence. And thus
ill go outside and find someone to kill me was in the episode instead of like hell im staying here and getting killed again
I would hope crunchyroll would go back and correct the mistake and look into how it happened in the first place and how to prevent it in the future

Crunchyroll made plot and character-altering mistakes through every single episode of S3 and only corrected the ones in episode 1 and 12 (to my knowledge) so I don't think they'll be correcting any others unless people are loud about it

Thanks for the clarification! I enjoy the dub and usually rewatch the show that way, but watched it first this time, so I did find that a weird line since I haven’t had time to give it a second viewing. Also, I’m wondering if the mysterious doors from before are going to make a reappearance. And if Echidna’s hunch about a secret fifth(?) rule was right on the money. Tho I do realize Subaru is breaking a pre-established rule here.

I get that people hate the amnesia for devolving Subaru's character but I like it honestly considering they are taking it very seriously with Subaru himself trying to properly greet everybody. Also, the fact that the gore returned kinda attracts me since I'm a fan of horror movies.

It certainly could have been a lot worse. I still can't say that I'm I thrilled to have taken a big backward step, but it is very effectively deployed.
Subaru is a bit of a fool, but believably so. And honestly, who would think rationally and calmly thrust straight (apparently) from a Japanese konbini and into this nightmare? He gives that a decent attempt first time around, but understandably gets more unhinged as time passes. I particularly liked Ram's reaction to it all. Typically aggressive, but the terror leaks though.
I feel for the rest of the group though, jumping straight from hero to this latest loop. And Subaru is very much the glue that holds this group together. Things don't really bode well for them until he can step back into that role.

I’d say what makes the amnesia plot annoying is that it feels like it’s only happening so the author can make Subaru suffer again.

I didn't feel this way when reading through the books but understand your conclusion. I'm gonna spoiler tag stuff but not talk about specific events - I feel like him losing his memories can serve as a lot of growth for everyone around him (by realizing how reliant they are on him) and on himself, if he ever regains his memories, by realizing how far he's come in the most unsubtle way possible. That also works for the audience, we'd taken Subaru for 'granted' especially in the last arc where there were only a couple resets very early on in the arc, and now he's at zero once again. It's good contrast

There is reason for it.

So, to anime-onlies, the new episode made a mistake this week. No, not Crunchy. The anime made the mistake this time. The mistake is massive, as it was a direct hint to what is going on with Subaru right now. By nature of telling the mistake, I point toward a massive mystery this arc, so use your own discretion. This spoiler tag is for anime-onlies who have seen the episode already:
When Subaru falls underground and touches the door, he says he opened three doors and was on the 4th door that wouldn't open, just like before he lost his memories. This is incorrect. In the novels, he actually opened FOUR doors this time, and was on the 5th. There is a major reason for this and the anime messed up, which means the scene no longer makes sense.
If you choose not to click the spoiler for now, after the arc, feel free to come back and spoil yourself, as it may also be relevant going forward as well.

Jesus based on the novel Christ by Sapphire can we [expletive] move onward somehow?! I’m about ready for this [expletive] tower to be burned to the ground and bulldozed over just to make sure it doesn’t ever come back. And everyone needs to get their damn memories back! I’m exhausted from trying to keep up with everything!
