And now I'm wondering if that nagging voice in the back of my head last week is because Wajima isn't as idealistic as she acts even if she is going against Emperor Palantine (Actually, Jabba the Hutt might be a better match for Lord Taira now that I think about it.)

Given the display of General Ryuumon's strategist this week, I take back my speculations that the kneeling thing was our MC's idea. It gives me hope that Ryuumon has a deeper strategy at play for taking out Taira than just unwavering loyalty to Yamato and duty.

BTW -what the hell is up with that sideways peace sign Taira keeps flashing? Is that a thing I'm just unaware of?

From the start I figured Wajima was basically going to be Bonapartist. I don't expect too much from the shows politics but I think she has to fail and probably deserve it for it to have an interesting arc in the long run.

As to the signal, I honestly just thought it was invented to maximise how much of an annoying hate sink he is? Its certainly working if I'm right!

So I'm revising my corollaries to rl to the emperor is Trump, who decides everything based on the last person he talked to, and Taira is his Miller, though he still shares the Trumpian attachment to nepotism. None of the above, real or fictional, know anything about war, and can't bear being schooled by anyone who does.

I think the peace sign means different things, depending on who is flashing it and to whom. When Taira aims it at his son, it's a victory, "you got this" sign. When the kid flashes it back, it's a "back atcha" sign he turns into half a scare quote to suggest he might be fabricating and/or embellishing some of his report. When Taira aims it at the emperor, it's a warning to keep his eyes only on Taira.

The gesture itself is ubiquitous among Japanese of all ages, especially younger ones (as well as young or rapper Americans) in photos and can just mean peace, we cool, we gangsta, we cute, or hey, wassup. In videos you see it drawn across the eyes as both a seductive move and don't look away from me. So yeah, very open to interpretation!

Just discovered this show on Amazon and binged the first few episodes. Its an interesting mix of the Genpei War at the end of the Heian period (Taira clan, puppet emperor being the grandson of the previous emperor). And Three Kingdoms China (obvious allusion to the Yellow Turban rebellion and it looks like the lead is essentially Cao Cao taking the civil service exam then rising through the ranks as the Empire disintegrates).

So...if I understand what those Yamato border dudes at the Hard Pass were saying, even though it was totally Taira and his grandson's public misjudgments at fault for a few thousand soldiers facing an army of 70,000 in, if the fortress falls, Taira will use it as an excuse to take total control of the military.

Feels like that "Incompetence is its own reward" saying is taking on a whole different spin here.

I think the phrase is setting them up to fail.

If the defection talks succeeded his family gain the political clout to dipose the army head.
If the army fails to protect his son then he has an excuse to dipose the army head.
If the army fails in its duty to protect the border then he has an excuse to assume direct control.

Not only was this another fun episode, but the last two episodes have been very solid while hardly featuring anyone you might expect to be a main character, and they've made the snot-nosed brat somewhat sympathetic. That all suggests some self-confidence in the shows story telling.

I honestly don't trust the little punk archivist not to totally betray the people who saved him given the (probable) nature of his upbringing.

But yeah, I wasn't expecting to enjoy this show anywhere near as much as I have.

I'm not sure how realistic that scene on the bridge was - would she really not have fired one last arrow given that revenge is her rason d'etre? Even if she thought his death was a signal for an ambush, did she think he couldn't yell or raise a hand if she left him alive? I guess the implication is that either the heavens were on his side or she was too unnerved to think clearly.

That said, the scene was badass.

I can only hope that the net Ryuumon and his strategist are casting will wind up with a certain bone-chillingly cringey bastard thrashing in the lines by the end of season 1.

I mean, no, I think its not really realistic, but this is basically an adaptation of a story of Zhuge Liang from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, just adapted to make it even more ludicrously badass. That and the panache and style of the scene make me feel fairly forgiving.

This is the only way that this show reminds me of that How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom (well, I guess the protagonist in both anime are also pragmatic intellectuals as rare as it is to have those words paired together), but the sacrifice of the advisor reminded me of spoiler[that tiger beast man general in HaRHBK].

The path of the benevolent tyrant is getting thornier and thornier.
