Just a few observations:

It felt like they kicked the animation up a notch for that fight with the centaur/Muapingari/lance-handed, polyhedron-headed whatever it was.

It took me a bit longer to catch on to what was going on with the miasma leak than it should have because Subaru has a long, complicated history of being a bit of a dillhole when he's angsting, and Ram's never been pleasant to him.

Speaking of which, Ram's relationship with Subaru has certainly gotten complicated.

And I'm still wondering if the magical sniper killed Subaru the first time because she can sense timelines and wanted to see if he'd come back. The title of the episode is Guardian of the Watchtower, and I suppose that could be the weird monster amalgam thing, but I think it's her.

Season 4, Episode 4

This is part of the strange between Subaru being someone who previously had to get over himself for thinking he is a chosen one, and now he is weirdly relevant. Subaru knows a weirdly lot about astronomy, so much that it must have been something he took the effort in learning. And although there was a bit of a worry of what could happen if Shaula learned that Subaru is not really Flugel, she sure acts like someone influenced by someone very much like Subaru.

Her saying that she recognised him by his smell, would imply that it is the aura of the Witch of Envy aspect activating, so Satella's attachment to Subaru could be related to him.

Ep 7

Oh dear, we just got an oblique title drop, starting life in another world from zero. That's ok with me, as I'm one of maybe five people in the world who always liked Subaru from the start and never reveled in seeing him get his "comeuppance."

Despite the expected Subaru bashing to come, I hope people will comment more here, as there's one of those source mavens in the Review thread who delights in smugly patronizing anime-only folks by dropping hints about if our speculations are right or wrong. So I'll be hanging out over here, even if I don't have much to say.

^ with the way they did the reveal I've legit seem people not realize what happened to Subaru all that well, but everyone's been so eager to confirm it it just feels like a missed opportunity to have people be actually surprised by the twists coming in the story, yeah

Ask and ye shall receive...(oh, wait, did I hear "no, not you..."? Smile too bad, I'm here now...) Not being one to shy away from much, including "naming names" I'd say I don't mind Juno016 as they are usually polite, fairly assiduous about spoiler-tagging plot developments and careful about providing speculation feedback. Most ANN commentators have some "character flaw" or other after all...

On to the Subaru bashing! Or rather, as I had pointed out in the other thread, commenting that his behavior seemed to me to take a few steps backward this season from the progression to calm maturity for no good reason. I thought it was annoying and even "cringe-worthy" how he is treating Great Spirit Beatrice now and what is with his Ep5 ridicule of Julius to his face even I suppose....? But funny that just as some commentators were saying to me "what are you talking about? Nothing's changed..." we get the surprise that S1 Subaru may be back again...

But I never blame the character, only the writer, and I wonder if this was an attempt at subtlety easing into this new development/arc or whatever? (only Juno016 knows...Wink) Also, talking about cringe-worthy BTW, Emilia's new purple uni-tard and what it reveals makes me wonder what anatomy classes the artists took? Is that what you get combining the "sexy thigh gap" with a pear-shape figure? If so, stop that! The last time she used the Bunny Ear Cloak she had a nice looking outfit under it...

I'd love it if the review comments and this forum were all combined into one ANN area.

Anyhoo, personally, if I'm mad about anything on this show, it's the way it's dangled Ren's catatonic state as a plotline to keep people watching for so long.

I myself don't dislike Subaru or find his portrayal erratic. Or, I guess more to the point, he's been consistently erratic from season 1. He's an ordinary dude suddenly yanked into an extraordinary situation. He's also got a lots of the passion and a low meltdown threshold, but he's a good dude at heart, and the dogged persistence part comes in when he's picking up the pieces of the messes he's made again and again and again. In that sense, he's tailor made for the "Save and reset" gift he's been given.

Subaru's not a typical, competent hero. He's a somewhat emotionally unstable dude with limited skills trying to pull himself through car wreck after car wreck after car wreck like a crash test dummy with a human soul suffering the entire time. That's the premise.

I'm not saying I've always loved the show. That five episode descent into depression and whining in season 1 almost got me to drop the anime - it was only three episodes short of the record for resetting held by the infamous "endless eight" arc that killed The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for so many people.

I didn't like Ren's abrupt "exit stage left-out."

And I didn't like the five (or was it six?) pronged story line of multiple protagonists in Season 3. I thought it was about two prongs too many. I didn't like that the sin bishops weren't killed. Not out of a desire for revenge, just tired of seeing the same raving faces.

But I'm liking season 4 pretty well. There's a lot of talking about emotion and rehashing increasingly tangled plot threads, but it hasn't reached That Time I Slimed level of boardroom meetings that drove me away. I agree that Emilia's new look needs some tweaking. Her leotard is so tight that I keep wincing and expecting to see a camel toe.

But I sort of like seeing Julius get his turn to grapple with some serious $h!+ and messing up along the way. I like how Ram is getting some screen time even when she's being more Ram than Ram. And I like seeing the plot and Subaru make some progress that feels real even if turns out to be another trap or tragedy in the making (and unmaking).

My 2 big complaints about the series are:

1. Subaru stopped being "just some guy." He keeps acquiring all sorts of magical nonsense powers, and the writing keeps bending itself in pretzels to make his knowledge relevant (as opposed to him figuring out how to apply himself). It's the writers doing the work, not the characters. Which maybe is the mysterious point, but that brings me to...

2. I simply don't care about the show's mysteries. Because everything is a writer's asspull, there's just nothing interesting about trying to "figure it out," and it's not a coincidence that the forum folks most interested in discussing the mysteries are the ones who already know the answers.

It's a shame, because so much of the show is excellently executed.

Subaru wasn't a "just some guy" since it was dropped that Satella is obsessed with him for some reason. He had to temper his worst elements, and he still isn't much of a physical threat, but it has been established that he isn't random.

Think they were talking ability-wise. He was just some guy who happened to have a phone, which people had never seen before, for the entire first arc. And for the second arc forward he learns some magic, which is said to be pretty weak in-universe but he still has his thing. Getting the Hand and contract with Beatrice later and now he's very much a part of the forces rather than just a guy
