Though what the hell was with that basket of oranges at the beginning of the episode?

Not sure what's confusing you. His mom sent them as a summer gift. Chekov's oranges, if you will. Smile

Unless I was California dreaming, I was talking about that weird "Sponge Bob" like effect where the oranges appeared to be either very life-like CGI or actual film footage with Yamagami's cartoon minions superimposed over them. Surprised

Ah, I didn't notice. It just looks like a painted bkg with the minions sliding into place over it.

I still believe that this anime is like a fusion of Natsame's Book of Friends and Campfire Cooking on Another World. The music, the animation and look, and the depth of the human supporting characters are all on about the same scale as Campfire Cooking on Another World, which, let's be honest, isn't very good in those specific regards. I like that and this anime anyhow, for their storylines and scenarios and overall vibes, but I thought I should mention it because Natsame's Book Friends is on a higher level in those categories as far as I'm concerned, especially in the music.

All three anime have mild mannered protagonists who get slowly but progressively more assertive, and all three anime have plus-sized, white, furry, supernatural mascots though in Natsame and this anime their sizes go back and forth. And all three have supernatural beings who are mostly benign or non-frightening, at least at first. The anime can get dark sometimes, but the overall vibe is mildly sunny.

Just thought I'd expand on that a bit.

The portrayal of Amaratsu and Susanoo has about as much mythological depth and richness as one of those stale marshmallow circus peanuts that are sold in grocery stores in my area for some reason, but the show is good natured about it and I'm not a myth scholar, so I don't take offense.

While Susano is loud and rather rude he is not anything close to an evil god. A bit of a tsundere I suppose. His training gave Minato a power boost and he managed to become a friend shortly before being dragged away. I do wonder how the town has functioned before Minato arrived. The sheer amount of negative energy and evil spirits are completely overwhelming the local onmyoji.

Those scammers are still around....

Agreed. Even after just the first episode I dubbed it Kusunoki's Notepad of Friends in the Preview Guide thread and my first post here noted that Yamagami is just Fel in fabulous colors, so we're on the same page, though you dove deeper into the similarities. Smile And yeah, similar, but not quite of Natsume's caliber.

I think the intent of Susanoo's jacket is that it's supposed to be a mirror of Orochi's scales, but unfortunately it looks like his jacket is quilted like a puffy comforter. Not quite the badass image he's trying to cultivate. Still, it helps that his seiyuu also voiced Dark Schneider in Bastard! if he's looking to ramp up the crazy. Smile

Oh kami, circus peanuts. Why are they banana flavored? And why are they always stale as if they're still selling off the original batches made in the late 1800s??

@Gina Szanboti

You are probably aware that the chocolate bark sold in drug stores is reprocessed unsold Easter bunnies. Circus peanuts are probably reprocessed unsold Peeps. Artificial banana flavor is extremely strong and covers a multitude of other flavors.

In case you were being at all serious, circus peanuts have been around more than 50 years longer than Peeps. Smile And they may claim circus peanuts are made of marshmallow, but that's clearly a lie, as is any claim that they are soft (perhaps they were at the turn of the 20th c.). They are not even remotely the texture of marshmallow. More like puffed Valentine hearts. I think they were chopped up and used in an original version of Lucky Charms though.

Well I was serious about the banana flavor. I've tasted it and the stuff is disgusting. Actually, marshmallow is not made of marsh mallows anymore either.

Marshmallow
Confection
A marshmallow is a soft, spongy confection made from sugar, water, and gelatin, whipped to a foam and stabilized by the gelatin. Originally made from the root of the marshmallow plant for medicinal purposes in ancient Egypt, the modern version evolved in 19th-century France, replacing the plant sap with egg whites and later gelatin, and is now a popular treat used in s'mores, hot chocolate, and other desserts.

Marsh mallow
Plant
Marsh mallow (Althaea officinalis) is a perennial plant in the hibiscus family, native to Europe and Africa, known for its soft, velvety leaves and pinkish flowers, and historically used to make the confection that shares its name. It thrives in moist, marshy areas and is valued for both ornamental and medicinal purposes, with its root traditionally used for coughs and skin irritations, though modern marshmallows no longer contain the plant.

From Google.

A surprisingly action filled final conflict for a slice of life show. Everyone is desperately trying to deal with the evil spirits but they are endless. I think that Minato can stand to be a bit more careful with his charms. Running around with all of them in hand when evil spirits are flying everywhere around you might not be the best of moves. I hope that two certain conmen receive some justice next week.

It would be kind of cool if the evil spirit was the one who Minato left neglected and festering back at his old home. Or sad. Or cool. But I doubt the show is going there anyhow. "I knew I forgot to pack something!"

I agree that Minato's handling of his charms was pretty stupid. It looked less like his charms were overpowered by the horde of evil sperm cell demons and more like he detonated all of his charms at once because he was holding them spread out but linked together like a paper fan.

Minato showed plenty of Chutzpah but not much of that there strategeric thinking.

So, I guess the big question is, what kind of shape is everyone's favorite mountain god going to be in when all the fighting is done?

What happened to his wind powers and sealing powers? Both seem like they'd be useful in this situation.

It also seems like this village of believers who are being miasma-ed would be praying their hearts out for deliverance. Why aren't they? If they are, why doesn't that mass influx of belief and reverence, even if weaker per individual, give the holy dog a power up?

Judging by the preview for next week Minato does remember that he has those powers, so I suppose it was done to make for a dramatic moment.

I am not sure but I think they said something to the effect of that the purple miasma cuts off the flow of belief and reverence.
