11:

Putting all of Koyun's flashbacks together paints a very clear and unpleasant image of how her middle school life was. It really is not wonder that she has those ramparts, though they have become a fair bit smaller. Ironic that Akine is seemingly being very chill and not a reason for concern while Momoka might be the type to create some drama. She was being manipulative in the episode and if things do not go her way I could see her getting nasty.

Agreed, Polar Opposites is such a gem that comparing other shows to it is unfair.

Well, I chose Polar Opposites as a convenient reference. The first half of episode 10 didn't feel like it would be out of place in, for example, A Star Brighter than the Sun- it just didn't work for me.

I think the mystery show element is certainly intentional; even moreso if we think of this as being a webcomic- you have to drive repeat traffic and mystery will do that. I tend to think with Ramparts the mystery and drama is a bit stronger than the slice of life, so this episode unravelling the middle school love triangle (where everyone just messes it up in their own ways, albeit to rather different degrees) was enjoyable.

I did enjoy the episode. One thing this show shares with Polar Opposites that I really appreciate is that everyone acts in very specific ways that are unique to them as a character without being overly reliant on tropey attitudes or behaviour. The characterization can be more sophisticated than the norm. Like how Koyun fell into her relationship with Iggy... that sort of very real ambivalence goes beyond what you normal see in these kind of shows.

Koyuri was both manipulative and duplicitous in her middle school years, she even pulled off a rare heroic "wounded gazelle gambit" that would make Peach Girl's Sae proud. Good thing she admitted how awful she was..... though I'm not sure she realizes how much she used her friends and rivals and that was what turned people against her.

But I wouldn't call it a mystery, Koyuri was an unreliable narrator, in order to turn the audience against anyone but her. It's a trope but not a mystery one here.

Speaking of tropes, when does Polar Opposites get good? I'm up to episode 4 and I'm baffled by it as the show seems to want me to think it created the "genki girl, stoic guy" trope. But it is interesting that this one lives off of tropes while the other would prefer me to not know any.

I think the series just isn't for you then. That's okay'
I tried to get into Dorehedoro but after two episodes it didn't click.

It doesn't. By which I mean it starts out exactly the same as it continues all the way through. I personally think it's consistently excellent in it's genre, but if you don't like it right away you just don't like it and should drop it basically immediately (personally, I think this is true of most media).

Personally, I find the female bully a more compelling subject for a storyline than the near season long case study of the Igarashi enigma which basically boiled down to a lukewarm "why not?" sort of relationship that went on too long if I'm understanding it correctly. Much Ado About Middling. But the series couldn't really focus on the bully at first because it spent 7 or so episodes making Igarashi seem like a bad guy instead of someone who was either (1) a good guy who got used or (2) a dense, kind of pushy guy who got so caught up in playing the hero that he didn't notice any signs of ambivalence or lack of chemistry or (3) all of the above. For me, the dramatic payoff didn't justify all the time spent moping and darkly hinting, but I can be a jaded soul.

And they couldn't really focus on the female bully earlier without revealing Igarashi's true role.

Animegomaniac - I agree that if you don't like the first two episodes of Polar Opposites you should just get off at the two-episode bus stop. Sometimes things just don't click, or it's just not the right time.

I have occasionally not gotten into an anime, then tried it years later and something clicked. There have been shows that I've liked that hardly anyone else seems to like as much, and there have been shows that everyone else seems crazy about that I've never been able to get into.

But if you don't like the first two episodes of Polar Opposites now, I don't see you liking episodes 3-12 anytime soon.

I am a little confused, how was Koyun manipulative in the confrontation scene? If it is about the smirk, hasn't it already been brought up that the "smirk" is a nervous tic she has, which happens at times that made people think she was bad or something?

The clear picture is that Koyun has bad social skills, and because of that she has been teased for not talking like her peers, and manipulated into a relationship.

It wasn't just the smirk, though that was definitely part of it in this case. When she heard the other kids starting to gather round to watch, she thought, "Come on," mentally egging her on to keep "dig[ging her] own grave." When Manatsu grabbed her face, she silently rejoiced, "Stay like that," until Igarashi could get there to see, while smiling victorious. I can't say I blame her for feeling vindictive though, after Manatsu had started it.

And it turns out she was not manipulated into that relationship, but rather agreed to it to get back at Manatsu, who had a crush on Igarashi, for using her and taking advantage of her "in" with the seniors, under the guise of friendship.
