What up dudes and dudettes? Very Happy

I putz around Instagram a lot and I sometimes come across clips of various cons
where a podcaster ask congoers hot takes and surveys. One topic that come up
a lot is "Worst Anime Dad". The two most common answers are Goku and Tucker
from Alchemist. I like to submit the dad from Evangelion who is an absolute
douchebag. He leaves Shinji as a kid and demands that he flies the EVA-1, not
caring if he dies in battle. Agree/disagree? Any other bad dads?

Good luck in your new bed. Enjoy your nightmare, hon, while you're resting
your head.

Agreed. Gendo Ikari ia probably my go to for being a manipulator and neglectful type.

Bonedrewd from Made In Abyss is up there, but that's more villainous cruelty, and extremely over the top, but I suppose Shou Tucker is similar in that area.

Goku as worst father seems like a bit of a stretch. Sure, he is not good, but that is not what comes to mind when I think of him at all, and I am not even sure that would be a major point when describing the character.

My first thoughts were Gendo Ikari and Shou Tucker.

Would throw Eren's dad from AoT, I mean he had this grand plan he didn't share with anyone and effed up his own son without giving him a choice.

Also, big one for Charles zi/vi/whatever Britannia! Definitely not winning dad of the year awards.

Apologies for going off in a slight tangent to discuss the general portrayal of father figures in Erased or, more accurately, the lack thereof. Without making any overt commentary on the role of fathers in the lives of children in Japan, their almost complete absence is a silent scream directed at the audience. The only examples are the elderly father of Jun Shiratori (the latter being convicted of multiple child killings spoiler[wrongfully]) and, by inference, the drunk/drug addled boyfriend of Kayo's mother who looks on stupidly while Kayo is routinely assaulted by her mother.

The only male character to display any parental virtues is the teacher, Gaku Yashiro spoiler[and we know how that ends].

One of the understated theses of the anime is society needs trustworthy father figures to function well.

In the first arc of Black Lagoon: The executive who first sends Rock to the South China Sea with a sensitive disc and then sends mercenaries to kill him and the entire crew of the Black Lagoon when things go wrong. There is a short vignette of him at home. His wife asks for help with their son who is becoming a failure. She is waved off with the comment "everything to do with the house is your responsibility" He then goes back to his business newspaper. This is just a short scene that doesn't effect the plot but says a lot about the executive. If this is common Japanese father behavior it would explain the absence of strong fathers in anime.
