Since the issue of illegal fansubbing has been bigger than ever, I decided to help do a little contribution. On YouTube, if you type in "Greg Ayres fansub", look for the user called ZZalapski. This person has nearly 40 videos from 2 panels (an October con and one from the last 7 weeks). It is very informative in my opinion. Plus, you'll see and hear (I mostly listen to videos while surfing the net or browsing through fanfics or illegal scanlations. Trying not to endorse it here.) some of the most respected dub voice actors like Taliesin Jaffe, Crispin "Zelgadiss" Freeman, Kyle "Teen Gohan" Hebert, Tiffany "Asuka Langley Soryu" Grant, and Greg's older broter Chris "Kei Kurono" Ayres.

BTW, with Studio Gonzo recently legitimately subbing Tower of Druaga and Blassreiter (which I just checked the view counts on each the shows' user profile on Youtube and it accounts to over 450,00 hits. Not bad), does this mean that either show could become licensed (Tower of Druaga, the show with more overall hits, I think would do somewhat well dubbed)?

Ooh, nice to see there's videos for it up on YouTube! I've been kicking myself for missing that panel at last year's NDK.

I've seen Greg's panel twice and found it informative both times. If anyone happens to be at a con where he's at I can almost guarantee you he'll have it there. Anyone at such a con should check it out.

By the way Druaga is going (God I hope Gonzo doesn't GONZO this one), it should be licensed and a dub would work, since it's not based on anything Japanese. Blassreiter however would be a terrible mistake to license, as it's not even worth watching for free, let alone paying 15 dollars per DVD.

I do hope more studios start releasing in this fashion, seeing ass quality subs can be attached. My one complaint is that now we can get 720p h.264 tv rips, and I'm sure they're still only going to offer low quality xvids, which does make a huge impact on the show.

Yeah, it does bother me that that's the closest thing I've found on Youtube that directly talks about the legality, etc of fansubs. I watched all of Ayres' panel at Sogencon but haven't watched the other. Unfortunately the mods may very well deem this as you promoting what could possibly be your own channel and thus lock this into the abyss of teh rules.

But for what it's worth, cool.

As long as this doesn't decay in to some redundant fansub debate then there's really no reason to lock it, so I wouldn't worry about it.

What do you mean "Gonzo going GONZO"? BTW, I agree Blassreiter doesn't seem like it would sell well. I don't grasp it very well and don't think it has as much greatness as Druaga (Though I have to admit Blassreiter's Amanda has some sexy boobs).

Nah, this doesn't seem to be self-advertisement. Although it is a bit redundant because the Greg Ayres Sogencon panel links have been brought up sometime in the past, in Talkback IIRC. Plus, the question about the Gonzo shows kind of boils down to "Will X be licensed, and when?" -- a question that we as fans can't know the answer to. But since it is a new distribution model, it can't hurt to discuss it.

"Gonzo going Gonzo" means that the show will spiral into an unavoidable trainwreck plagued by decreasing animation quality, cliches, poorly-chosen staff, and a conclusion that won't properly end the show. Laughing It's how Gonzo handles most of its series: take an interesting original concept and then beat it to death so that the audience despises it. Dragonaut is their most recent example of Gonzo going Gonzo. I haven't seen Blassreiter (and never will) but it will definitely get licensed, you can assume that Funimation and ADV are already fighting for it (and all the other Gonzo crap that is destined to do well in R1).

I also have a question regarding Gonzo and how it subtitled and distributed these two series on its own... why did Special A get excluded? It is a co-production with AIC so that might be one reason. Or maybe they just don't expect it to do well.

I mean exactly what it should appear, Gonzo doing what they've done to many of their shows by turning them into pure crapfests throughout it when the premise might have been amazing. It's a shame they do good character designs.

As for Special A's, it's probably because Blassreiter and Druaga were easier to aim at American audiences due to their style and themes, while Special A's was more of a Japanese-influcned slice-of-life moe-fest. I'm sure they felt that audiences wouldn't care so much? Or maybe AIC did have the influence to say no. It seems like Gonzo is trying to produce all these shows that they believe Americans want, but they mostly turn out to be pretty crappy.
