OK I suppose I should expect a big backlash. Also SPOILERS just in case...
However is it just me, or is Nightow's art getting worse for every volume of the manga. I got volume 13 recently, and can barely read it.
Plus it has stopped making sense, it's just random explosions, gunfire, and people not dieing after getting hit multiple multiple times.
The anime version is so much better than this stuff it is not even funny...
Hope the upcoming Trigun sequel (if it ever gets done) is beter...

Eric: It stopped making sense for me around volume 3. I wasn't too much of a fan of the anime, either. I personally prefer Black Cat.

I'm still enjoying it. Although I do agree with you about it being kind of hard to read. On some of the pages the bubbles are all over the place so its kind of hard to know which one to read first.

I've found the manga's art somewhat poor as well. Very messy and hard to follow. I've only read the first few volumes of maximum though so I'm not sure about it getting worse. I think it might have been somewhat better in the original Trigun volumes though.

I like the art, actually.
And Wolfwood's Replacement is awesome. He looks bad ass with the hat and cloak the kid gives him.
Trigun Maximum is a real joy to read and I can't wait for Volume 13

Well it should be out in bookstores right now, cause I just got it on Monday.
Thanks for the feedback, glad that it was not just me.

Either his artwork has improved or I'm just completely used to it. Sure there are one or two confusing frames, but I find that the following frames and pages usually clarify what's going on. It's not a big enough issue for me to consider it a problem. I actually really like his style and I absolutely can't wait for his Jump SQ series (Kekkei Sensou, I think). Where did you hear about a sequel? They're making a movie, but not a sequel to the manga.
As for the story itself, I love how epic it's gotten. I read the first volume of Trigun back when it first came out, but I didn't continue because I figured it would be more or less the same as the anime. I randomly started it again (because the volumes looked nice on the bookshelf at the store lol) and I learned how wrong I was. I think it has been a truly great action series(this is one manga I could see becoming a live action movie without much difficulty), and I can't wait for the final volume. One thing I really like about the manga more than the anime is that Knives is more of a presence. He's my favorite character...and I'm really liking Livio too.
While I'm on the topic of Livio......this might be weird, but has anyone noticed his badunkadunk? I seriously can't not notice it while I'm reading. I can't put my finger on it, but Nightow makes his butt so...round?? But anyways, I think he's really cool. His fight with Wolfwood was amazing, but ever since he's joined Vash I've liked him a whole lot more. Hopefully he'll make an appearance in the movie.
My one gripe has been that Meryl and Millie have been very underused (aside from some key moments here and there)....but I guess I expected them to be more in the forefront because of the anime.

Huh, what? MOVIE? Sweet!
I agree, though. The ladies haven't been used as much in the manga. They need to have more ass kicking moments like when they took out that bounty hunter in Vol. 1 on Maximum.

Yeah that is what I meant, there are rumors that they are supposed to be making a Trigun X (or something similar) movie. Apparently it's supposed to be about Vash vs. Wolfwood.

I stopped reading the Trigun Maximum manga after the first volume, it was just too confusing. I love the anime, and that's why I decided to pick up Maximum, thinking that it was a direct sequel to the original manga/anime, and I thought I would know what was going on because I watched the anime, but, oh, was I wrong.
Maybe I'll try reading it again sometime.

I don't like the fact that the every fight has to be "epic", and that they get less attention than the flashbacks.

Not exactly. As you may or may not know:
| ANN's Encyclopedia wrote: | | Trigun was first serialized in Shonen Captain magazine from the series debut in 1995 until the magazine was cancelled in 1997.
Following the cancelation of Shonen Captain, Nightow changed publishers to Shonen Gahosha and the series continued to be serialized in Young King Ours magazine. Due to the original publisher retaining the name Trigun, Nightow had to change the title to Trigun Maximum, which isn’t a sequel; just a new name for the rest of the same series. |
So the manga actually consists of two volumes under the name "Trigun" and then a bunch more under the name "Trigun Maximum". Getting back to the anime though, it does follow the manga more or less at first. However somewhere roughly midway through volume 2 it diverges. The anime goes on to it's own original conclusion whereas the manga goes in it's own direction building towards volume 1 of Trigun Maximum.
If you want to be able to understand Maximum I really recommend that you read volume 2 of Trigun at least, if not volume 1 as well. If you've only seen the anime, you will be missing some key events and perhaps even worse you will be totally mislead by many events from the anime which have actually not happened in the manga.

I find the manga superior in terms of fleshing out the characters and story, but I can understand how some find it difficult to follow, especially during action sequences. Nightow's action scenes can get a bit jumbled and at times it's even difficult to figure out who the word bubbles belong to. Not to mention that certain battles begin to take entirely too long (Vash and Wolfwood vs Livio and Master Chapel, Vash vs Legato, Vash vs Knives, etc).
Still, I really enjoy how much more complex even the villians seem. Like for instance, my favorite Gung Ho Gun, Midvalley the Hornfreak. He was just basically a token baddie in the television series, but in Trigun he has opinions on Legato and Knives, and even rebels (though it doesn't turn out well). Plus the flashbacks to Vash and Knives' "childhood" were much more informative.
I like the anime version as well, but I felt like there were too many unanswered questions and unexplored avenues there. I'm not asking for the "Hellsing Ultimate" treatment or a second series like FMA (which I think is unnecessary, since the first FMA series was great even with its differences). I just think that maybe they could have done a little better in at least inventing some new depths for the series, even if they were ahead of the manga.

I am on Volume 10 right now and I am in love with it. The first few volumes seems to be a little messy but it seems to get better after vol. 3.I have really been enjoying the story.
It is recently one of my most favorite mangas of all time.
