Interesting. Your description makes this series seem like some sort of French version of Hellsing, albeit not quite contemporary.

More like The Three Musketeers meets Night of the Living Dead. Admittedly, you have to go in mentally willing to go with that idea if you're going to like it - as well as some considerable tweaking of history. But for what it was, I absolutely loved it. As for your comment about personality, eyeresist, I humbly disagree. Keep in mind that the main characters are all trained to stay calm in crises and wouldn't be very realistic if they generally didn't, as well as that with the exception of d'Eon and Teillagory none of them know eachother well yet at the point you've watched up to. They admittedly won't win any awards for breaking character molds, but they certainly did grow on me.

Finished disc 3 of Pani Poni Dash last night. The more I watch, the more I enjoy this. Still pretty sure I'm missing more than half of the jokes and references, but its still very entertaining. Reminds me of the very first time I saw Project A-Ko back in the day. I was quite literally falling down laughing as I watched it even though I missed a good deal of the in-jokes and references. Also very glad I bought the original box set ADV Films put out instead of Funi's box. The "In Class With The Cast" features are so worth it, even if you aren't a dub fan you'll get a good bit of entertainment out of it. I may watch the next disc or two later on today.

I am most likely going to have to watch Pani Poni Dash at least 3 more times to fully get every joke. Next I will watch the English with all subs for signs, then Japanese with either or, probably limited signs, then Japanese with full signs and ADV notes.

To be honest, it's more like Gankutsuou without the futuristic update. spoiler[Plus zombies.]

Finished a few series, here are my thoughts.

There are many things to like and dislike about Clannad. Tomoya is your standart super nice guy who lives in a perfect world["where garbage walks itself to trash bins"], where all girls he can possibly encounter are nice too, only every one of them has to be broken by some tragic past(even protagonist suffers same simptoms). The world they live in is nice too where a traveling suitcase can pass oceans and land, unopened, to bring joy to some girl on her birthday... I use word "nice" as it's vague meaning perfectly fits Clannad's overall moe feel. As much as I complain though, I mostly enjoyed the series. The comedy part is very good too, for example I like mahou-shoujo Fuuko's sudden appearances & attempts to "save the day" as well as Tomoya's jokes followed by silent observation can be a blast; and Kyou's unleashed tsundere side in locked gym storage room is priceless. I also like when Clannad entered, briefly, harem grounds which I find better than melodramatic arcs(apparantly source material is harem-type visual novel). I find overall story to be very good when it flows naturally, building up relationships along the way and when it's not playing "broken girls with tragic past" card; too bad about 1/3 of the series(if not more) is just about that. Nagisa:"How can I live my dream when I sacrificed theirs," and we have to wait for collaborative effort to slap some sense into her... Anyway I just wish it had less of carefully arranged drama - "Very Good".

Ironic or not, but I only got emotional during episode 24(Tomoyo Arc). Even though I hated Tomoya's reasoning, I am happy with episode's ending. I am looking forward to Clannad After Story now, and maybe later - Kanon. First, I need a little break from this moeblob though...

Mnemosyne gets a solid "Very Good" and I would like to recommend it, at least for those who can stand it's subject matter as it's rated "Mature" for a reason. Mnemosyne has Baccano! level of violence and torture but also yuri sex. Anything that is still legal without censoring is shown here. Story is pretty solid as well, with a twist of passing decades troughout the series. I also like animation style; and we have Mamiko Noto voicing Rin(protagonist) and Rie Kugimiya as side-kick Mimi, both of them involved in some hawt yuri scenes! So if you are ok with subject matter, or like it "R" rated as I do, definitly check this title out.

You can't take away the fact that Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is highly original. A series that features shibari in opening can't be bad Rolling Eyes . I like SZS's style, random story, distinct characters and of course humor. Story does get slow at times though and there are many times I had to pause video to read would be my major complains. Still it's a "Very Good" series.

EDIT: Damn, I can't stop thinking about Tomoyo Arc. Very cruel teaser to something that could've been great. I now understand that paragraph Theron has written about it. If only story actually went that way, elaborating a little more, with less of self-doubt... I hope I'll see that in my dreams tonight.

Obviously, I'll be watching some of the stuff I got from Otakon. For some reason I decided to start with Brigadoon, the manga adaptation of which I read ages ago. The anime version is quite hilarious, and not just because the main's best friend's name is "Moe" (which, when I had read the manga adaptation when I was younger and didn't know what moe was, I read the name as "Moe" as in "Larry, Moe, and Curly"). I quite like Sunrise's animation, but this seems like something that Bandai should've picked up, not Tokyopop. The music has been a bit weird so far, but oddly fitting (and I like the OP). The dub is ranging for me quite a bit, some of the side character voices are kinda annoying and I've certainly heard Wendee Lee do far better on characters older than Marin. Can't believe Tony Oliver does Melan's voice, but he's good like usual. And Moe's voice and personality is...definitely kinda moe-ish and this is making for a lot of inadvertantly hilarious scenes that wouldn't be as funny if her name was Akane or something. This was made in 2000, which I'm pretty sure was before the whole moe thing began becoming more common. It's been having some interesting fight scenes as well and some hilarious scenes that I know weren't in the manga initially. So, I quite look forward to finishing it, But I've got three other series to get to as well! And a bunch of manga.

Another update!
Shuffle - Very Happy this show turned out perfect for me despite the first three discs being slow. I love it when a series meets my expectations.

Mao-chan - Cutesy 8 year old girls defending Japan against cute aliens. I kid you not. They're called cute aliens. Comprised of 15 minute episodes, I think this was a blessing. Not a bad series, but very, very, very, very repetitive. Even speech was repetitive. Watch an episode per day, but don't make the mistake I did and marathon it.

Venus vs. Virus - Good show with a horrid, horrid ending. Less than three minutes climaxed this entire series. Oh well. Can't win them all.

Daphne in the Brilliant Blue - Ooh! A sleeper hit for me! I really enjoyed this series. Yes, yes, typical plot we've all seen before, but hey... scantily clad females with guns has yet to get tiring.

Nuku Nuku Dash - Curse TRSI's bargain bin! (not really!) I told myself to stay away from this series due to its "retelling" of one of my favorite campy series ever. Surprisingly, it's not all that bad. It's hard to stay away from the comparison factor, but luckily doesn't do any damage. Should have this one finished tonight.

Argh, I'm so jealous. I waited too long to pull the trigger on TRSI's 25 for $100 sale and now they don't have vol. 2 of Daphne. It doesn't look like I can get it particularly cheap anywhere else, which means I'll probably have to break down and buy the $45 box collection that TRSI is offering. $45 is actually not a bad price, it's just galling to pay that when if I'd been a little faster, I could have got the same thing for $28 (sans artbox, of course).

I'm glad you liked it and I'm kind of curious as to what you thought about the whole Kaede thing considering how LuckySeven, the Rancorous, and I teased you about it.

I wasn't shocked by it, truthfully. I've seen it done many times before. What I did find surprising, though, was spoiler[the "king of gods" didn't go over board and threaten Rin with horror just because he didn't pick their daughter. Oh, and YEAH FOR ASA! I loved her instantly from the start! My kinda girl.] That was refreshing.

I almost forgot, at Otakon, I saw Otaku no Video on Sunday, I was 5 minutes late due to being at the Frederick Schodt panel (thankfully nearby, quite enjoyed the panel myself), but man, my friend and I could not stop laughing. It was a mix between live action and animated segments and I actually preferred the live action mocumentary style interviews with massive otaku over the animated story of otaku making a company. I felt a mix of utter delight and "oh my god, I hope other (non-otaku) people don't view me like that" while watching. Still, this is going on my next TRSI order for sure, it is totally collection worthy and one guy informed me they play it first and last at every Otakon so I'll certainly see it next year too.
rated: very good, in part because I missed the first 5 minutes, I'm sure the animated story of an otaku related company rising would have made more sense. I'm assuming the guy started off as a normal, non-anime watching person. But man, this should be watched for the hilarious interviews alone, they don't connect to the animated story so it should be fine to just watch those.

I just marathoned the second boxed set of GTO -- Great Teacher Onizuka, without really meaning to. If anime is like crack, this series to me was a distilled, purer, more addictive form of that. I just had to find out what was going to happen next.

I found the humor completely ridiculous and over the top, but I enjoy that in a comedy. And it didn't skimp on the characters, either. I hated almost all the students when they were introduced, only to grow very attached to them by the time their arc was completed.

Onizuka is more complex than he lets on. He can show that he cares for his students while making fun of them at the same time. The chances he takes and the lengths he goes to when trying to win over his students is endearing, because he truly means what he's saying and believes in what he's doing at that moment. It's also very, very funny because anyone else doing those things would die or be in prison afterward. And the series plays those moments for all the comedy they're worth.

The only part I have a minor issue with is the very end. spoiler[The entire series convinced me that Onizuka belongs in that classroom, with those students. After he finally won over the last holdout -- Aizawa -- he ditches for a new teaching job in California. Putting aside the issue of a language barrier and other plot holes involved in that move, I'm more interested in what Class 3-4 can do now that they are united with Onizuka at the helm. Though, I can understand the point being made at the end: Class 3-4's issues were solved, and Onizuka was moving on to another group of kids who need his unique help.]

Overall, I rate this series "Excellent"

My sentiments exaclty. Although that was what I thought when I had first finished the series. spoiler[ The way I see it, I think they were trying to possibly say that Onizuka was in it not for the kids, but actually for himself. Otherwise, if he was in it for the kids, he would have stayed there to watch those kids grow, and being there for them in the peculiar yet effective way he was. The fact that he decided to go teach more kids in california also can imply that he doens't just want to effect a few kids that he "likes" but he wants to help "youth" as a whole. That's my take on it. Whether or not that makes him a better person is up to you. To each his own right. But I did take issue with that part like you did. It wasn't something I would expect Onizuka... The Legendary Onizuka, to do, I thought he was the kind of person who would stay with those kids, because I was under the impression they had a stronger bond, but, if you use my explanation, he's more in it to help "youth" out then those specific kids.]

But yeah, I agree with what everything you said in your statements about GTO.

As for me, i'm rewatching Death Note again so i can get old of it finnally and not feel as though i missed anything or need to view it again like what just happened for me. Then I'm going to watch Gungrave, which I just bought, and I'm very excited for that. My anime-pals all tell me that I don't know anime untill i've watched Gungrave. I doubt that's true, but... at least i know they hold it with high repsects.

Regarding GTO, spoiler[wasn't there a warrant out for Onizuka's arrest, and so he had to flee the country? Because you two are making him sound callous and selfish, when really he had to run away from the very kids he loved. So cut him a break already.]

I found a copy of the Daicon IV opening animation. It blew my mind. How did they manage to cram that much awesomeness into such a short clip?
